I think there should be a combination of both.

Both are necessary for me to accomplish rectification work.

For those not well into intermediate level astrology, it is best to stick with transits. Learn the way they work in aggregate and what orbs to use. Learn about minor aspects. Study Robert Hand's classic work Planets in Transit.

Learning these will set you up to learn to use progressions properly and take on more advanced astrology.

Transits are the current movements of the planets in relation to your birth chart.

Progressions are transits from your early days and weeks of life projected onto the ensuing months and years of your life in day-for-a-year fashion.

So both are transits, but progressions utilize an Earth-centric metaphor (one turn on its axis equated to one revolution around the Sun).

Transits are external, progressions are internal.

If we subscribe to the notion that all things have an opposite side, then transits and progressions operate on opposite ends of the prediction spectrum.

With transits there is an external imposition upon the natal chart.

With progressions there is an "aging" of the natal chart itself.
