For example: When someone is telling something sad, and that person smiles.
and at similar times.

I know someone who does this. I don't know what time he was born, but it is a solar sign of Taurus, and I think Taurus is too serious a sign to laugh at the most inadequate moments.

What astrological explanation would this have?

Well earth signs tend towards dry humour, so that's not really surprising. They don't really know how to react to emotional or mushy situations. They either freeze not knowing what to do or just laugh or make jokes because of how uncomfortable they feel expressing softness. It's not that they mean to be rude. It's just they don't know how to react appropriately in times like that.

Capricorn placements have been these type of people in my experience. Second is Virgo.

That is bc sag is trying to find the humor in the messed up situation, sometimes that helps, that is how stand up comedians make a living. Ofcourse you have to read the person and situation to see if this approach is a good fit for that moment.

I am an Earth Sun plus a Gemini Moon and I have been in many uncomfortable situations when someone tells me something sad and I cant stop myself from grinning ear to ear, that includes death of someone. I force myself not to, but it happens, so I have to explain myself afterwards. The only times I feel really sad and shaken, no smiles whatsoever, is when I hear about abuse of a child or an animal. This makes me cry instantly.

^ I think Gemini can be like that LOL

I don't think Capricorns are like that all, I have met Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to many capricorns and they tend to be very sensitive to social cues and avoid laughing inappropriately bc they don't want to be offensive and seem to be quite mindful around this usually unless they have moon in Sagittarius, typically they are very careful and measured around what they say.

Hah, is my Sagittarius 3rd house perhaps the reason why my humor is so messed up!

Virgos. They can be awkward as hell sometimes! (me included, asc virg). And I mean for the situation inappropiate weird reactions.

And not the type of awkward when one jokes to lighten a serious mood or question. Something my gemini mar-moon-chir stellium opposite saturn often does. Taking to dry humor, dark humor and extreeeme sarcasm. A type of defense mechanism.

However thats not our subject here I reccon.

Hi Kani! <3

Sounds like my themes, I have merc opposite pluto/scorp and air moon.

I have heard from an other astrologer about virgos weirdness and weird reactions. Sudden weirdness though.

Also my virgo sun friend can be like this. He can say and act in totall weirdness and in a matter of seconds come and go from weird to normal. Its freaky but I act like I don't notice it when it happens and just keep my calm so he won't feel any more bad haha

Interestingly I think is bc I am a virgo that I am able to discriminate/assess when not to joke and when to just be empathic and be present with the person in pain...

Also I am a virgo and my humor is not dry at all, witty is more my style and I can appreciate dark humor up to a point. I am not into slapstick either, I like humor that has an element of surprise or twist or humor that is witty.

I should have added that me smiling when someone says something dramatic or sad is NOT coming from humour. I am not making fun of the situation at all. Butttttt..the large grin comes regardless and unfathomably so. lol. go figure.

^ Reminds me of this incident where I was feeling sad after hearing the story of a kid who was raped and told the Gemini about the story but then she made fun of it in such a manner that it actually made me laugh..

I can relate, more so cuz I'm unsure on how to react. Although it doesn't necessarily need to be a sad thing.

It can be something like me thinking about something so random and I'll just start smiling during a somewhat normal conversation with someone. So I'm not necessarily smiling cuz of what they're saying, more so cuz of what I'm thinking.

I feel it must be my Moon in my twelfth, where people are 'brought in' to my subconscious world where I display emotions to the public. (once read it somewhere actually)

I'm a Taurus Sun, Gemini Moon.

Gemini is the main sign that comes to mind. I used to have a problem with this myself as a Gemini Moon, but I've become too serious to be guilty of it now and it's taking a while for this seriousness to wear off. In the past, the issue was I'd be reminded of something else in the moment, something more funny and less depressing. When I laugh or smile inappropriately, it's never because I want to. It's hard for me to hold back and I would easily explain this to the other person to assure them what they said was not funny to me at all and my brain was just too dumb to be considerate of their situation.

Yes I have noticed that people who do this are not trying to be di*ks and feel bad for the person. I think is their way unconciously of protecting themselves and to avoid over-empathizing by creating some distance or detachment from the situation. Its their way of not getting lost in the pain of what they are hearing so they don't lose their balance in a sense. Its their way of trying to avoid secondary trauma maybe.

Gemini can giggle or laugh at inappropriate times. Maybe the Taurus has Venus in Gemini or Mars in Gemini?

The person I'm on about used to laughed at the absolutely most inapppropriate times. She also used to laugh about anything, whenver noone else would laught. It was really weird. And she was like that since childhood- I don't know if she is still the same as I havent seen her in a while
