The planet in aspect to the Asc cusp tends to give that planet "martial" traits. In that the relationship puts the planet "out there" and injects clarity into it to assert itself.

Mars(Aries ruler)/Sun(Aries exaltation) tend to have the biggest advantage or in that they "light up" the area of life they are in. This especially so when Pluto is in aspect to either one.

So when Sun/Mars is in the 1st house, who one is can be very clear and what one wants out of life is also very clear. Even at a young age, these people can be seen to have "drive" (barring Neptune in aspect to either or Sun/Marsin the 12th house)

So the 1st house gives Aries traits ime & that includes planets therein.And so when Sun/Moon are in aspect(especially by conjunction) the Moon can soften the rays of the Sun in an almost "eclipse" like fashion.

The two function as a unified force in that the ego(Sun) and sense of purpose of the individual is tied into their emotional nature(Moon)

So this person honours themselves best when they are true to how they feel.And the additional position of both in the 1st house suggests that there is emphasis on being transparent & putting their whole personality out there.

But if you add Mars in the mix, it heats both up. Burns up the emotions of the Moon and exacerbates the heat of the Sun.

But since Mars is the solar ruler of the 1st house,the 1st house does have a similar effect on planets in there. So Moon/Sun in 1st wil have similar traits to Sun/Moon in aspect to Mars.

The effect changes however if Sun/Moon is in the 4th. The "hidden" nature of the 4th cools the heat of the Sun. So when in the 4th , the Moon is stronger in nature than the Sun thereby heightening the natives sensitivity.

Here the native tends to focus a lot on introspection and emotional well-being and grows to care little of what is "out there" than what is "in here".
