Over here in the UK, the BBC have been showing a series called The Planets which is about - funnily enough - the planets in our solar system. It's a big budget science extravaganza presented by superstar physicist Dr Brian Cox. Think its airing on PBS in the USA some time in July.

Anyway, the episode on Jupiter made me look at its role in astrology in a slightly new way. I think we often look at the mythology of planet's namesakes to help us interpret its behaviour in a chart so it was fascinating to see how a planet's astronomical history could also overlap/play a part.

I've made it known in the past how I've had issues with Jupiter being the planet of "good luck" - the notion of it being a celestial Fairy Godfather, sprinkling opportunities like fairy dust as it passes through certain houses just hasn't meshed with my experience and those of others I've known and spoken to. I've had more time with the idea Jupiter magnifies and expands. And so it was curious to learn how Jupiter's behaviour in the solar system plays into this.

Jupiter, by all accounts, was the first planet to form and in the early days of the solar system - whilst the other planets were still forming - went on a bit of a rampage. It began to move towards the sun (expanding its territory, anyone?).

In doing so, it stole and scattered the material that Ceres would have otherwise have accumulated to become a bona-fide planet. It also stole and scattered enough of Mars' material that it stunted its growth. The fact Mars thus turned out smaller than Earth played a part in the loss of its oceans and, thus, the opportunity for it to become another "blue planet".

The same fate would have befallen Earth if Jupiter had not been stopped in its tracks and pulled back to its previous territory. And what did this? Saturn. As the second gas giant came of age, it put a leash on Jupiter's wanderings and set some boundaries that exist to this day.

Its fascinating to see a "dark side" to Jupiter in this tale. He's the bringer of unchecked expansion as much as blessings; his "I'll do what I want and go where I want" attitude stealing from others and/or denying their fair share. And interesting to see Saturn as the good guy here. Setting limits so that others can thrive.

To be fair, maybe Jupiter himself doesn't realise the havoc he brings. And there were some blessings, at least for Earth: its likely that Jupiter's expansion helped initiate life on Earth. If he hadn't gone on the rampage we may never have existed. But again, if Saturn hadn't reigned him in he would have gone too far and we wouldn't be here either!

Any thoughts?

Just to add: I think this also offers insight into why so many divorces take place when Jupiter's in the 7th House.

If Jupiter's all about breaking boundaries and expanding into new territory, its no surprise some people might experience this as an urge to break their vows, have an affair or else simply dissolve their marriage.

Or perhaps it could be that Jupiter in the 7th House expands the power of others over you? That they begin to steal and scatter the equivalent of your "cosmic material" and you begin to feel stunted and thwarted like Ceres and Mars?

Jupiter transiting the 7th is also a marriage aspect for singles.

So transits to the 7th says less about Jupiter, and more about the house.

I don't think we disagree. I'm not saying transits to the 7th in general say anything about Jupiter. But obviously a transit of the 7th house by, say, Mars is going to have a different manifestation to a transit by, say, Saturn based on the qualities of what each planet bring to the table.

What the programme suggested to me is that Jupiter isn't just a "good guy" bringing blessings to all, but - as with all planets - a double-edged sword. He represents expanding boundaries but also unchecked expansion that can have negative consequences if not channelled correctly.

My mention of Jupiter transits to the 7th house was simply as a case study - I've read it stated on here that there are stats showing more divorces occur during Jupiter transits to the 7th house and this, to me, fits the notion that Jupiter encourages the breaking of boundaries and expansion for good-or-ill. Of course, if you're single then it could also indicate an expansion into marriage - so both can be true!

That said, Ive always thought of actual marriage as more of a Saturn thing. Then again, I am a Cap...

The year tJupiter travelled past my 6H, I started working. tMercury/Saturn were on my MC. Though pay was low but I had a fruitful year and made lifelong friends. So this was good.

When tJupiter entered my 7H (with tPluto close behind conjunct NN), I had my first serious relationship but it was horrible and we broke up. He even made me change jobs for him (tSaturn was travelling my 10H) which also lasted only for a few months so I ended up jobless & a broken heart. He went on to emotionally torture me for years following the breakup. So this was BAD.

FF a few years...

I made a career switch and stayed with that organisation for 7yrs when tJupiter Rx my 10H with tSN on the MC. This was good again. Not sure about the SN's significance. tPluto was still conjunct my Dsc/NN and tUranus Rx in my 9H. I got a higher education.

Exactly 2yrs later...

tSaturn/Jupiter Rx over my Asc with tJupiter widely conjunct my Venus. tPluto/Chiron/Moon were on my Dsc. I had my first long-term relationship. It was both good & bad as he was the first guy I felt right but the timing was horribly wrong. After 6+yrs we broke up and I was sad for a long time.

When tJupiter went past my 6H again, I switched to a different industry and stayed for 10yrs. At the same time, tUranus/NN were in my 10H and tNeptune/Chiron Rx in my 9H. I got a higher education and went through major career growth.

Transit Jupiter went one round and reached my 6H again last year. I fell madly in love with someone and we were tog for a year. Broke up when tJupiter Rx in 7H. This despite tJupiter conjunct Moon, tSun conjunct Venus and tVenus on Asc.

So it seems Jupiter transiting my 7H never brought good things, despite Jupiter being my Dsc ruler.

tJupiter in my 6H seems to be better.

My husband has Libra Jupiter opposite Aries Sun, Mercury and I've been fascinated with how he can make the most trivial things sound HUGE! I didn't catch on to this in the beginning but then I realized that his stories about certain events being "the best" and certain people "being great", were not that best and great. It was just ordinary events and ordinary people but the way he expressed this painted a picture of something magnified x 1000 :-/

Personally, I have Jupiter contra-parallel (opposite) Moon and have always struggled with my emotions. They have been the size of an ocean and hard to deal with and it's made me do a lot of stupid and dangerous things just to get away from them.
I once met a man (Leo Sun/Cancer Moon) and as we were chit-chatting I told him I was a "wonderer" as in: I wonder about a lot of things-which is true. He looked at me and said: "no, you are a wAnderer". At the time I had no clue what he was on about because I was head and shoulders deep in my own **** but now, looking back, I know exactly what he meant and yes, I wandered..

One thing with Jupiter though (also have him conjunct MC, SN and Chiron 9H) is that even when things are very dark and the going gets really tough, I somehow manage to pull through and I'll most likely be the one that makes sure to keep the spirit up for someone else that's down and out.
