I‘m noticing something for years now.. whenever Sun travels through either house I‘m experiencing a major down emotionally, I also slip into bad habits and feel quite vulnerable around this time. I become a hermit and neglect my health and daily chores.

Any ideas how to deal with that?

To be forewarned is to be forearmed. I think you've already gained the most important insight. What you do with that is up to you. You may need to be prepared with a boost from a natural remedy like a flower essence, homeopathic remedy, or a particular supplement like 5HTP or a mood-elevating herb. At some point you'll figure out what works for you so you don't have that cycle coming around again and putting you out of commission.

If it were me I'd have those ideas in mind, but I'd probably also just co-create the solution with no presumptions about the best way. By co-create I mean on a consciousness level by visualizing/verbalizing while in a meditative state of mind.

This happens to me, too - I was thinking about that last week, although the severity depends on what's going on at the time. Last year, the first part of October sucked, but I was okay after that. This year, the entire month has been off - I have been depressed, had nightmares (more last night). When I take something to help me sleep, it doesn't always help. July (Cancer time, 9th house) tends to hit me harder than the 8th house, unless I'm forgetting something.

I think it's mainly down to the most depressing transit I've had, this entire past decade: Pluto in my 3rd house. Saturn has been there for a couple of years, too, and they're hitting all of my cardinal, including personal Aries planets. I'm dealing with that, no matter what the month.

Take care of yourself the best that you can, and don't be afraid to ask for help from professionals. Depression is nothing to be ashamed of. Plenty of amazing and popular people have dealt with depression at some point in their lives. If you feel like you're in a crisis, there are people available to help.

And don't be too hard on yourself. When people are depressed, things like housework and hygiene often fall to the wayside. It takes time to feel better. Hang in there.
