What kind of aspects (or lack of certain aspects) is involved in relationships/marriages that last decades or entire lives and are HAPPY? Not people that stayed together but didn’t have a good connection or happy marriage and grew far apart.

@rainyvirgo, unfortunately there are no guarantees when it comes to relationships. There are easy aspects that can make a connection feel effortless but can be such smooth sailing that people grow apart because they’re not putting in any effort. Harsh aspects can put people at odds and can cause major ego clashes, but with enough will from both parties it can become the glue in a relationship. Difficult circumstances (often represented by harsh transits to planets in both natal charts) and not enough maturity can end any relationship, no matter how beautiful the synastry. And even short relationships can have a big impact on us and our development.

Significant relationships are usually indicated by aspects between the big three: Ascendant, Sun and Moon. Sun conjunct Moon and Ascendant conjunct Descendant are classic examples. The IC/MC, the rulers of the angular houses, Saturn, the nodes and the Vertex are also often involved. The ruler of the 1st house conjunct the Descendant or the ruler of the 7th house conjunct the Ascendant are a big indicator of compatibility. However, none of these will make a relationship last indefinitely. And maybe that’s how some relationships are meant to be. It’s not easy but often we learn the most from our pain.

With my ex husband (relationship lasted 14 years and was generally supportive but we grew apart and lost our connection): my R1 Venus conjunct his R10 Mars and ancient R7 Saturn, my Ascendant conjunct his modern R7 Uranus. My Vertex conjunct his MC. And my R7 Mars and R4 Saturn conjunct his Moon. There are a lot more aspects but these are definitely very significant. And again the disclaimer that aspects never guarantee a “happily ever after”. Relationships are hard work and both people need to be mature and committed enough to make it work.

Saturn and Jupiter.

Positive Saturn aspects and contacts have to be significant enough to bind them in time.

Positive Jupiter aspects and contacts have to be significant enough for the Saturn binding to not feel like ball and chain and to promote good will and happiness within the couple.

Big plus if Jupiter and Saturn are in positive aspects to each other in the synastry chart.

Saturn is the biggest factor and MUST get along with the other major players. I have noticed that in couple that have synastry aspects involving squares or opposition from Jupiter, Neptune or Pluto TO SATURN, they may last a long time, then they break up in a nasty divorce. Turned out, they were putting up an appearance of happiness, but were miserable together. I know this couple that had been together for 40 years and then went through an epic divorce. His Jupiter trined her Saturn, but her Saturn squared his Pluto. She was the one who filed for divorce.

If it’s 30-35 happy years with 10-5 years of misery and divorce, I count it as an average happy enough marriage.
