how significant is it if there are two planets that are in opposite signs, or trine signs or whatever, but the degrees are so wide that they don't actually end up making an aspect

is there still an effect there?
how can you measure how strong it is?

@whatifyouareright

What you are referring to is aspect by sign. And this is what popular astrology is based off of.

So it matters not if you are Sag 0 and your partner is 29 Leo, the two are "trine". When actually (by degree aspect) they are a tight square.

I think sign aspect compatibility is valid. This whether trine, sextile, conj, opp or square. For it is usually the modus operandi of the negative polarity signs Vir, Tau, Cap, Can,Pis, Sco (the risk averse energy) that function fundamentally differently from the positive polarity(the risk seekers) Ari, Leo, Sag ,Ge,Aqua and Libra.

Based off of this(outside of degree) there is a gender & elemental understanding amongst the former group. And likewise with the latter. But ultimately(because of the polarity differences) a clash between the former with the latter.

How does one measure the energy of the compatibility? The assumption would be that the two people should relatively get along long term. This can only be measured retrospectively sometimes .

But personally i have found that compatibility is more about the rising signs. The angular houses 1 and 7th relate more to the self & generally (as people) we tend to unconsciously look for people who resemble us in many ways.

In my case for instance, there is an overwhelmingly large amount of people in my life with their planets in my 1st and/or 7th house. The angular houses tend to take centre stage and demand attention.

And if the planets of the partner are in tight aspect to the Asc/Dsc by opposition or conjunction, they stick around in my life.or matter a lot.

I would also include Draconic planets in this. They seem to align. In other words, the Draconic planets in the angular houses of your natal as well the natal planets of the partner in the angular houses 1 & 7 of your Draconic.

For instance ,my best friend for years has Sat/Lib/Plu in Libra in my natal 7th. He also has Draco Sun/Moon/Merc/Mars in my natal 7th. His Moon/Merc/Mars are conj my Dsc axis by degree.

His natal Sun/Venus/Mars in Aqu is in my Draco 1st house of Aqu. His Ven conj my Draco Asc in Aqu(by degree).

Another has Sun- Aqu closely conj my Draco Asc (by degree). His natal Moon in Aries is conjunct my natal Asc(by degree).

I have had a very intense connection with a natal Sun/Merc in Aqua in my Draco 1st house. Their natal Moon in Leo is in my Draco 7th house. Ans natal Jup conj my Asc in Ari by deg.

Aspects by degree(especially when angular 1st and 7th) are intense for relationships. This whether natal or Draconic.

also what about planets that do form an opposition for example but are in compatible signs...are they more compatible or incompatible?

Sometimes those planets will be in contra-parallel aspect. Check your declinations. If you don't know what they are read my page on Declinations: http://kannonmcafee.wordpress.com/declinations/

To be very clear ...

Aspects are geometry between points. That geometric angle may be loose or tight, which becomes part of the interpretation of the aspect.

Signs are arc segments and do not form aspects. The kind of sign-based thinking common among some astrologers is part of what holds it back. All astrology is rooted in planets and the geometry they and Earth engage in as Earth turns and the planets orbit. When astrologers' study is focused on charts rather than on learning what's actually going on in the sky — in mundi rotation and the astronomical geometry of the planets, then we get fuzzy notions built around signs that lack depth.

Check your declinations.
