I can understand what you mean. It is all very relative for each individual. Kinda like if someone did a hearing test using a bell with different candidates. Some would hear the bell 20 metres away.
Others need it to be closer.No doubt the closer it gets I.e. 1 metre, the louder it is.But that is not necessarily where everyone starts to pick up reception. Nor is the sound intense for all who are involved.
This to me is similar to transits, natal orbs & synastry etc. All very subjective and arbitrarily setup relative to each individual. Some Astrologers stop at 10 for major aspects. Others at 8 or 6 etc.
Notwithstanding what I said above however,I have always thought that if one feels the strong impact of a planet outside the orbs of 10,it could be one of the following reasons;
1. That planet is making a tighter aspect with your Sun/Moon midpoint or is angular in the chart(if not making aspects with Sun and Moon individually).
2. That planet is in mutual reception with the Sun/Moon I.e. Saturn in Leo for Sun in Aqua. Or Moon in Aries for Mars in Cancer etc. This can be regardless of orb.
3. That planet is aspected via another planet I.e. Sun 10 Virgo, Mercury 16 Virgo, Venus 22 Virgo. Because of the orbs conjunction of Sun to Mercury AND Mercury conj Venus, then Sun and Venus have a relationship of conjunction because of their connection to Mercury.
I find the above is applicable most ardently in natal interpretations. There is usually a pattern that shows up which joins prima facie "widely" aspected planets.
For me, I don't feel the planetary energy of my Uranus Sag. It would be "conjunct" without the orbs.
However,Uranus is still very strong in my chart because of its tight aspect to the Midheaven. And also because Merc/Ura midpoint =Sun and Moon/Ura midpoint =Sun. Both very tight orbs.
There is always something "closer" happening where the energy is more potent and visceral. That is why for me orbs are important.
Maximum is 10 for natal aspects and synastry(this more specifically for conjunctions and oppositions).I stop at 6 for squares & 4 for trines/ sextiles. This includes planets that arc to conj or oppose the angles in natal.In synastry (10 max) and for squares (6 max).
For transits, its 3 for me. That's the max. It matters not whether the planet is personal/transpersonal.Progressions must be tighter (3 to exact) like Midpoints. Same is true of solar arcs(1 degree to exact)applying and separating.
