I know Mars is not strong in Taurus but does the conjunction and house placement give it strength at all?

Yes. In 3rd,6th and 10th, its good. When conjunct Sun, it makes one very active.

Mars is however very tricky and when not controlled properly, it may get out of hand and be troublesome(regardless of placement).

Mars in Taurus may be good with long-term tasks. Things that require commitment and stamina to complete. They may not have enough sense of urgency for emergency tasks or those that require a quick turnaround. Not unless Uranus is in aspect to Mars in ♉

Yes it does. Good question. But basically because Mars is cazimi it’s going to be under the control of the Sun for the majority of the time.
