I just want to post something on Dyspraxic Adults.

many children with Dyspraxia are understood for their difficulties....after all they are in special education classes, and so they given special attention

on the other hand, adults are not.

Dyspraxic children grow up to be Dyspraxic adults.

They don't change. They just learn to adapt, behave, and try to be like neurotypicals to fit in a neurotypical society that Dyspraxics are fish out of water in.

There is danger of judging them based on a neurotypical scale. Therefore, they can be misunderstood and have difficulty with normal people...especially with interacting with others, friendships, relationships, work environments, schools, the justice system, the mental health system.

especially for males

I know this personally as a Dyspraxic.

Adults with dyspraxia often have the following characteristics:

Atentional problems and poor concentration (often lose track of conversations and run off at a tangent, often display symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder)

Language (quick and loud speech, problems with intonation and misinterpretation of language)

Obsessional characteristics

Coordination difficulties (difficulty differentiating between right and left and this hinders safe driving)

Poor handwriting

Very low self esteem

Very emotional

Unrealistic expectations

Constant lateness for appointments

Inability to remember instructions

Inability to complete tasks quickly

Decisions constantly being altered

Depression

Difficulty maintaining peer relationships

Sleeping disorders

High comorbidity with ADHD and psychiatric illness http://www.angelfire.com/journal/ldps/Dyspraxia.htm

Adult Symptoms of Dyspraxia

“People who have dyspraxia often find the routine tasks of daily life such as driving, household chores, cooking and grooming difficult. They can also find coping at work is hard. People with dyspraxia usually have a combination of problems, including:Gross motor co-ordination skills (large movements):

* Poor balance. Difficulty in riding a bicycle, going up and down hills
* Poor posture and fatigue. Difficulty in standing for a long time as a result of weak muscle tone. Floppy, unstable round the joints. Some people with dyspraxia may have flat feet
* Poor integration of the two sides of the body. Difficulty with some sports involving jumping and cycling
* Poor hand-eye co-ordination. Difficulty with team sports especially those which involve catching a ball and batting. Difficulties with driving a car
* Lack of rhythm when dancing, doing aerobics
* Clumsy gait and movement. Difficulty changing direction, stopping and starting actions
* Exaggerated 'accessory movements' such as flapping arms when running
* Tendency to fall, trip, bump into things and people

Fine motor co-ordination skills (small movements):
* Lack of manual dexterity. Poor at two-handed tasks, causing problems with using cutlery, cleaning, cooking, ironing, craft work, playing musical instruments
* Poor manipulative skills. Difficulty with typing, handwriting and drawing. May have a poor pen grip, press too hard when writing and have difficulty when writing along a line
* Inadequate grasp. Difficulty using tools and domestic implements, locks and keys
* Difficulty with dressing and grooming activities, such as putting on makeup, shaving, doing hair, fastening clothes and tying shoelaces

Poorly established hand dominance:

* May use either hand for different tasks at different times

Speech and language:

* May talk continuously and repeat themselves. Some people with dyspraxia have difficulty with organizing the content and sequence of their language
* May have unclear speech and be unable to pronounce some words
* Speech may have uncontrolled pitch, volume and rate

Eye movements:

* Tracking. Difficulty in following a moving object smoothly with eyes without moving head excessively. Tendency to lose the place while reading
* Poor relocating. Cannot look quickly and effectively from one object to another (for example, looking from a TV to a magazine)

Perception (interpretation of the different senses):

* Poor visual perception
* Over-sensitive to light
* Difficulty in distinguishing sounds from background noise. Tendency to be over-sensitive to noise
* Over- or under-sensitive to touch. Can result in dislike of being touched and/or aversion to over-loose or tight clothing - tactile defensiveness
* Over- or under-sensitive to smell and taste, temperature and pain
* Lack of awareness of body position in space and spatial relationships. Can result in bumping into and tripping over things and people, dropping and spilling things
* Little sense of time, speed, distance or weight. Leading to difficulties driving, cooking
* Inadequate sense of direction. Difficulty distinguishing right from left means map reading skills are poor

Learning, thought and memory:

* Difficulty in planning and organising thought
* Poor memory, especially short-term memory. May forget and lose things
* Unfocused and erratic. Can be messy and cluttered
* Poor sequencing causes problems with maths, reading and spelling and writing reports at work
* Accuracy problems. Difficulty with copying sounds, writing, movements, proofreading
* Difficulty in following instructions, especially more than one at a time
* Difficulty with concentration. May be easily distracted
* May do only one thing at a time properly, though may try to do many things at once
* Slow to finish a task. May daydream and wander about aimlessly

Emotion and behavior:

* Difficulty in listening to people, especially in large groups. Can be tactless, interrupt frequently. Problems with team work
* Difficulty in picking up non-verbal signals or in judging tone or pitch of voice in themselves and or others. Tendency to take things literally. May listen but not understand
* Slow to adapt to new or unpredictable situations. Sometimes avoids them altogether
* Impulsive. Tendency to be easily frustrated, wanting immediate gratification
* Tendency to be erratic have 'good and bad days'
* Tendency to opt out of things that are too difficult

Emotions as a result of difficulties experienced:

* Tend to get stressed, depressed and anxious easily
* May have difficulty sleeping
* Prone to low self-esteem, emotional outbursts, phobias, fears, obsessions, compulsions and addictive behavior

Many of these characteristics are not unique to people with dyspraxia and not even the most severe case will have all the above characteristics. But adults with dyspraxia will tend to have more than their fair share of co-ordination and perceptual difficulties.”

you are ok. and pretty smart too!

actually twice as smart now that i saw a reply you wrote in another thread. you said something i was thinking exactly.

why do all people that have past life recall have to be jesus and eve and queens? were there no wheel makers, hairbraiders and bricklayers?

Thanks all for the nice words.
I agree that I posted views in the wrong place. I was tactless. That's something I need to work on.

Here is more stuff on Dyspraxia in regards to relationships...domestic violence

DYSPRAXIA AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGIANST MEN

According To Travis (1999)
“Men are increasingly the victims of domestic violence, and are just as likely as women to be assaulted by a partner, according to Home Office research published yesterday.

The men most likely to be attacked are in their early 30s and unmarried, but living with a woman.
The findings, from the British Crime Survey, show there are some 6.6 million incidents of assault in the home each year, evenly split between men and women.
But the research also shows that women are twice as likely to be injured, and are much more likely to suffer repeated attacks. They are also less likely to be in a financial position to be able to leave a violent relationship.

It also shows that the rise in domestic attacks on men by women is a 1990s phenomenon. In 1995 just over 4 per cent of men and women said they had been assaulted by a current or former partner in the last year. But 23 per cent of women said they had been assaulted by a partner at some time - compared with 15 per cent of men.

Women are at greatest risk of attack after a relationship has broken up or they and their spouse have separated. The researchers say women have a different emotional reaction to separation, and are less likely to use violence to express their feelings: ''Women's violence against men is, therefore, more likely to be within the context of an relationship.''

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND WOMEN

According to Hauge and Malos (1993)
"The common expression 'rule of thumb', the origin of expression derives from the right of man to beat his wife with a stick providing it is no thicker than his thumb"
In Britain the law allowing women to be punished in this way was stopped in 1882, but the beatings still carry on.

DYSPRAXIA AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

In my opinion women living with dyspraxia are more likely to experience domestic violence, due to them being unable to meet the stereotypical gender roles society expects women to achieve. For example good house keeping skills, cooking ironing caused by having a hidden disability.

A non-dyspraxic partner can criticize their dyspraxic partner in a cruel way in front of their children and encourage the children to join in with the ridicule. A woman living with dyspraxia may have difficulties maintaining the perfect fashionable groomed appearance portrayed by the media, due to her co-ordination difficulties. She may have problems brushing her hair and putting on make-up. She may choose clothes that are easy to fasten which may not be the latest fashion, causing their partner to criticisce her for not making an effort to look good for him.
A dyspraxic male may be br belitled by his partner for his attempts at DIY and sports.

A mother living with dyspraxia may have difficulties with childcare, this may be criticised if the dyspraxia is not recognised or the father may refuse to help and ignore her needs. This added stress can make mild dyspraxia more severe.

Dyspraxics of either gender can be easily manipulated by their partners and may tolerate emotional and physical abuse rather than deciding to live as a single person and feel that they would not cope on their own or may be trapped by financial circumstances.

In my experience both men and women who live with dyspraxia suffer bullying and discrimination from an early age. This results in internalised oppression and low self-esteem. This can continue when she/he is an adult if his/her dyspraxia is misunderstood at work. Partners who are controlling are more likely to choose a person who has low self-esteem in a relationship, because of their venerability. Especially if he/she has not developed the self-confidence to make decisions for her/himself, due to low expectations and of society, others lack of understanding or due to the label dyspraxia. This learned helplessness can affect a dyspraxic person’s’ self esteem and also explain the circumstances of isolation and dependence and isolation in which those people find themselves.

Reading the symptoms convinces me that my cousin might be - if not totally, partially dyspraxic.

He suffered a fall as a 3 yr old from the 3 rd story of our family home - there was no excessive bleeding by apparently some subcutaneous hameorrage that must have result in permanent damage to the parts of his brain responsible for using Logic and Reasoning in daily interactions and normal functions.

He has been given a lot of slack by his teachers and classmates who understand and love him - but now that he is appraoching adolescence his realisation of his limitations is frustrating him and since the past 2 years he has been disruptive and hyperactive.

He has the sharpest memory and can remember entire passages from books but gets a zero score in math or when asked to give his analysis of information - he just CANNOT deduce anything .His teachers have been extensively generous with and he is not in special ed because there is no one else like him in his grade. In india a special ed student can ask and avail of regular teaching at schools.

But now his teachers refused to excuse him if he wants to continue - his math scores will not be tolerated anymore.he doesnt want to go to any kind of school anymore and wants to start working in our family business - but when he was told that the fact that he cant do math wil llead to anyone and everyone taking him for a ride he took it hard and has been depressed.

He came here for extensive medical tests because they dont have all that in a small town - my friend who is a counselling shrink took care of him.She however doesnt think its dyslexia or such because he is shrper than a normal kid when not depressed and hyperactive.

But he does display Avoidant and victim - narcissitic disorer as do many ADD,ADHD,and dyslexcs and others with such neurotypical disorders.

He almost got misdiagnosed as bipolar but now we are sure thats not the case.

He has been asked to confront the fact that he alone has to be responsible for his life, his actions and communication - and the light is shining - his attitude has changed now that he doesnt unrealistically feel entitled to everyone bending backwards to accomodate him.

His self-esteem hit rock bottom as a consequence of letting go of narcisstic supply from others for being - as he thinks himself to be a victim and hence special. His hyperactivity increased and he was given something similar to ritalin which led to apathy and listlessness for 2 days - then we took him off it.

Its almost too much for a 13 yr old to discover he is not like evreyone else , but my little man refuses to let his Vicitm -Entitlement dig him into a hole from which he wont ever get out , by expecting that the world change to accomodate him or that everyone else owes him something because he doesnt have what others take for granted.

The counsellor told him his ego is not yet formed completely which leads him to expect that others pander to him - this is called narcissistic energy supply . that explains why he has been the class clown *** trouble maker , disrupting the class to get attention or reverting to to the innocent victim and not talking at all so everyone around him treats him with the consideration that is extended to a 3 yr old.

We are trying to have him be exempt from math and have someon else write his papers and have him dictate them - that is allowed here.

I am going to print the symptoms and discuss them with our counsellor so we can run these tests that we didnt - he took an MRI and personality exams for narcissim, dyslexia and sociopathic behaviours - which ALL seem to feature in such neurotypical disorders.

He lacks logic and reasoning in his thinking like any 3 yr old who just cannot be approached with logic or reason or expected to act from them.

but he is facing these deficiencies and though its turbulent for his mind refusing to indulge in these behaviours anymore.

Thanks for lisitng all the symptoms .

Very useless comment... But the word dyspraxic makes it sound difficult! Like u dont want it but not because of its effects but more because you wonder how to pronounce it.

Raymond, this thing is a label. Problem with label is the label itself

Take gay, if i define myself gay, other will be more likely to do the same, and some might do it with their prejudices. That is when it becomes a problem. i should be accepted as i am (therefore as gay) Ideally by everyone. But because some people didnt show up the day tolerance was distributed, we have had a double portion and we should be generous to them.

When we feel accepted as we are, we forget about the labels, proof that we didnt need them in fact.

In that respect, gay is different from dyspraxic because it's only a three letter word more easily pronounced.

pire,

I don't think of Dyspraxic being bad just like I don't think of gay being bad. Dyspraxia and other neuro-divergent conditions have their strengths/gifts and not just weaknesses/problem.

here are stuff about Dyspraxia strengths
http://www.colsal.org.uk/sites/daa/THEGIFTOFDYSPRAXIA.asp http://www.hull.ac.uk/disability/downloads/dyswhatlexiapraxia.pdf http://www.danda.org.uk/pages/danda-focus/my-dysphraxic-strengths.php http://www.brainhe.com/students/types/dyspraxia.html http://www.abdo.ie/dyspraxia.html

I want to show you some of the stuff that I wrote in my ad " WANTING TO MAKE NEURODIVERGENT FRIENDS TO FORM A NEURODIVERSITY GROUP" which I have posted on craigslist in Sacramento,California section.

I am looking for friends that are neurodivergent which means neurological differences like Dyslexia,Dyspraxia,ADHD,Autistic Spectrum. I have Dyslexia,Dyspraxia,ADHD myself.
I was in special education for 3 years. As a little kid, I resembled somebody with autism...especially with my problems with verbal communications and hypersensitivity.
I was misplaced with the mentally retarded in 1st grade too. Auditory therapy, speech therapy, phonics, and motor skills therapy helped remediate my Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. There have been misdiagnoses of schizoaffective bipolar disorder by psychiatrists without any psychological nor neurological testing being done in 1999 and 2002. I learned about my neurodivergence in 2003, and I owe a lot to Dr. Harold N. Levinson's books. I was diagnosed as having inattentive type ADHD, Dysthymia,Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Avoidant Personality Disorder in 2004. In 2005, I went to see Dr. Harold N. Levinson in New York, and he diagnosed me as having cerebellar vestibular dysfunction which he believed was the root of neurodivergent conditions. His testing made it possible for me to be examined by Veteran Affairs neurologists in 2006 leading to their confirmation of my Dyslexia and Dyspraxia.

I succeeded in getting my own neurodivergence recognized and documented for the first time since my special education years. For many years, I thought I was stupid, incompetent, and worthless. Many other people thought I was that way too. However,I have above average intelligence like many neuro-divergents have. I know what it's like to be viewed as being stupid but also be viewed as being smart too. I am a paradox because I can seem stupid and smart at the same time. I have both considerable strengths and considerable weaknesses.
My strengths are in imagination, nonlinear, intuitive, outside the box thinking, and long term memory. My weaknesses are in linear things, sequences, routine, time, coordination, organization as well as short term memory, and auditory processing, and visual tracking. I use my strengths to compensate for my weaknesses. I am the uneven type. I can confuse a lot of people. I am an extremely sensitive, emotional person like many neurodivergents are,and I take cod liver oil with its Omega 3 fatty acids to help decrease my hypersensitivity and hyperemotionality. Because of my experiences as a neuro-divergent, I believe in treating others like I want to be treated - a human being with a soul. It's part of my idealism in regards to my belief that there should be unity and universal love as well as tolerance and and accepting of neurodiversity. Therefore, I feel that it's my life mission to be a neurodiversity advocate.

I would like to help form a non profit neurodiversity organization here in the USA. I want to put a lot of emphasis on non-drug alternative remedies like herbs,massage/bodywork,aromatherapy,biofeedback,vitamins/minerals,meditation,audio-visual stimulation,Davis methods, color therapy, and other things. I want to help with preventing misdiagnosing too. The symptoms of neurodivergence overlap quite a bit with psychiatric disorders.
For instance, poor coordination,left/right confusion, problems with memory/concentration,speech problems are not just symptoms of disorganized type of schizophrenia but also dyspraxia. I also want to raise better awareness and understanding of Dyslexia. Too many people think it's a visual processing problem, but most have auditory, phonological processing problems and that's recognized by International Dyslexia Association.

The main thing is that I want to stress that having a different type of mind doesn't mean having a deficient mind. We are not retarded, stupid, nor crazy for having an "outside the box" type of mind. I want to stress the importance of early intervention therapies like I had. Of course, I won't stop stressing the need for education reform. It is strongly needed. We neurodivergents need to be taught in a multisensory way. We can't be taught by just auditory sequential teaching methods that are taught in most schools.

I just became a member of Spiritual Life Center,an interfaith unity church on May 31, 2009. I want to use volunteering in the community through the church as a stepping stone to forming the nonprofit neurodiversity organization. That church was one of the presenters of The Children Of The New Earth Conference. Therefore, I know that I am in the right place.

My life purpose is to be a neurodiversity advocate. I believe that all my experiences has prepared me. There are many other things that I have yet to experience that will also help me in my path. I don't see the nonprofit organization being formed until 2014.

I would like to start a neurodiversity group which can be a stepping stone to forming a nonprofit neurodiversity organization that is similar to DANDA (Developmental Adult Neuro-Diversity Association that is located in the UK. I want mine to be for all ages.
http://www.danda.org.uk/

According to DANDA

The term Neuro-Diversity was first coined in the USA in the nineties on a computer list for people with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Internet searches on the term tend to direct you to sites dealing with these conditions. It was also used by dyslexics on one of their lists in the USA. Unlike most names for ‘medical’ conditions, it was not chosen by the professionals.

However, many have now adopted it. Neuro-Diversity refers to the spectrum of neurological profiles describing how effective an individual is in processing information. This information comes in many forms, including written and spoken language, sounds, visual images, light, temperature, touch, texture and taste – as well as movement and co-ordination signals form the brain.

The processing of all these things includes not only receiving and interpreting, but also transmitting, concentrating and storing. For most people, i.e. the Neuro-Typical (NT), the cognitive profile is relatively smooth, with little variation in effectiveness of information processing.

This is in line with their general level of intellectual and reasoning ability. In contrast, a minority of people, i.e. the Neuro-Divergent (ND) have a cognitive profile which shows significant peaks and troughs, denoting significant disparity between the best and worst of their information processing.

The processing differences are present from birth, and are independent of any basic physical malfunctions, for example of eyes, ears or limbs. It is thought that 10% of the population is significantly ND, with many more having some degree of neuro-diversity. The norms of ‘easy’ and ‘difficult’ tend not to work for NDs, and in many cases are actually reversed.

For some, complex mathematical analysis is ‘a walk in the park’, where an actual walk in the park can be a nightmare.

I will stop right there. You can read the rest of the Neuro-Divergent explanation here:
http://www.danda.org.uk/pages/about-danda.php

I was contacted by Phil Weaver. He read my ad, and he emailed me because of the information in the post and that it was obviously something that I was passionate about. He is a web marketer and is promoting a new online neuro-sensory training program which is extremely beneficial for learning differences. He told me that he looked around the web and found that there is a real need for a community for adult learning differences and parents of children with learning differences. He says that is a web developer and he's experienced at building community. He thought that he could do the technical end of it and I might be interested in being involved in some way such as being a moderator. He figured it would further my goals and his so it's a win win.

He's in the process of building the site right now. He thought maybe he'd do something in the way of geographical locator so people could meet up.

I told him that I am very interested in joining the operation because I think that it's a great cause.

I told him that Dyspraxia was not included in the sites, and he is going to looking into that.

here are the sites www.braintrainingsystem.com www.learning-aids.com

Doors are opening for me helping me along my path as a neuro-diversity advocate.

I have already given my Neuro-Diversity advertisement to one of the ministers at my church, and she told me that she was give it to people to see if there is a possibility of having a neuro-diversity group at the church. She is the Youth Minister at the church. She also conducted "A New Earth" class that I have attended. She was at the Children Of The New Earth Conference.

I also created Astrology of Neurodivergence tribe on tribenet January 29th.

I am very curious about astrological indicators for neurodivergence. I strongly believe that a lot of the astrological aspects for psychological/psychiatric problems also fit with neurodivergence. After all, the symptoms/traits of psychological/psychiatric problems overlap with the symptoms and traits of neurodivergence. That's one of the main things that I stress as a neuro-diversity advocate because of the concern of psychiatric misdiagnosing of neuro-divergent people leading to giving them medications that they don't need.

I have also decided to create Neuro-Diversity Meetup group here in Sacramento,California.

I have decided to create it
July 12, 2009
Sacramento,California
4:00 PM

this is how I am going to explain, present the meetup group.

This meetup group is to raise awareness about neuro-divergence and promote neurodiversity. Neurodivergence will be looked at from the neurodivergent perspective which means that it will be looked at in a way that it's considered a variation of the human condition.

Anything that has to do with neuro-divergence will be open to discussion. It can be people just talking about their own neurodivergence and how it affects them and others. We will discuss how neuro-divergence affects relationships. We will provide support, solutions, and resources. We want to help neuro-divergents to understand their weaknesses and strengths of their neurodivergence.

Natural remedies for neurodivergent weaknesses will be discussed. Special education therapies like speech therapy, occupational therapy, and auditory therapy that correct neuro-divergent weaknesses will also be discussed. We will discuss how to utilize neuro-divergent strengths and how they can be applied to certain activities and occupations.

Indigo,Crystal will also be discussed. They seem to be New Age terms for neuro-divergence. We will discuss various views about the concept of Indigo,Crystal and whether it applies to certain generations or if it applies to certain individuals of all ages.

“It is absolutely the perfect name,” Dr. Brown said, given the continuing discord among astronomers and the public over whether Pluto should have retained its planetary status.

In mythology, Eris ignited discord that led to the Trojan War.

“She causes strife by causing arguments among men, by making them think their opinions are right and everyone else’s is wrong,” Dr. Brown said. “It really is just perfect.”
