Anyone up for a bit of bargaining?OK, excessive wordage about "doing the right thing" lately on these boards, and whilst that's all well and good let's have a bit of action. I need some action. Your right thing may differ from my right thing, but I'm willing to listen to what your priorities are. So what I'm proposing is this: my "right thing" consists of not driving because I think it's one of the major causes of pollution. So, if you will swap just ONE JOURNEY this week (or whatever timescale you prefer) by car for a more sustainable method (bus, train, walking, biking, scooter, roller skating etc) then you can ask me to do do one thing that you think is an important priority. It is important I think for us to get experiences of being in the others' shoes. It need not be a do-gooder thing. Just an experience that you like and you would recommend to others. Who is up for swapping one journey and in turn suggesting something that I can do this week that I don't do right now, which might be intriguing, fun, bizarre, worthy, bonkers, eye-opening, testing, challenging. You could recommend a book, a visit, an activity. Whatever. And to report back on your findings? I would like to know, for instance, what you did and saw and appreciated whilst you were roller skating. Is this silly? I dunno.

Libran son was dithering this morning so I drove him up to school so he wouldn't be late. Sorry. Generally we try and walk everywhere that is within the radius of a couple of miles. But, I can't think of anything I think you should do that is a priority. Unless you conduct yourself in a way that shows a complete lack of respect for other people, let your dog poop all over their lawn or throw eggs at their house. It doesn't seem like Ms Wheels. No,nothing springs to mind. Throwing out too much rubbish? Some people are so wasteful. That is slowly getting squeezed by local government policy, anyway. IP: Logged |

Hello to you my lovely Libran sister from across the pond. Sh!t, that was a mouthful, lol.I love your idea & no, I don't think it's silly at all. It would be a most excellent adventure. I haven't had a car for years now so I can't get you to swap me on that. I will have to pick your brains & find out what else you can give up for me. IP: Logged |

Ms Spanks!!!!! What a pleasure! How are you lovely?!Ok, well tell me about something you like. Have you massaged anyone lately? I was thinking for all the non-drivers, go massage someone, a dog, a baby, a big hunky man, an elderly person's feet. I was giving a massage the other day and I really got how cool it was. I don't know who was more relaxed.

Absolutely. My daughter just got her temporary driving permit last week. I was supposed to take her driving, as she must have someone over 21 years old with her while she practices. I was trying to think of a way out of it, since there are not enough sedatives in my home to make me feel comfortable, and I am fairly certain that chugging something out of a brown paper bag from the passenger seat is unacceptable. So I will simply tell her I promised Wheels, and you don't have to do ANYTHING for me, thanks Wheels! IP: Logged |

is riding my moped to the store cheating? or no motorized vehicles at all? i will try for no motorized vehicles. i have to think if a lot of people committed to 2 days a week it would make a bit of a difference. maybe not, but at least i will feel like i am making an effort.IP: Logged |

deal on the letter, that should do the job.... .....but since we are really talking about pollution .....and cigarette butts are not biodegradeable, lets both go one further and pick up and throw away at least 10 cigarette butts that we see on the ground? fair? i will give details of how it went on next monday. lots of weekends i don't drive, but i never committed not to, and i will do my best not to use the moped, but if i run out of tampons or something i need right away,,,,it is there... so....here goes!IP: Logged |

I connected with an old person last week. As my son was running down the street waving a toy gun the old guy shouted, "do us a favour, love, and shoot Gordon Brown for me..." We both had a bit of a cackle. IP: Logged |

i will gladly give up my car except for outcalls with my massage table...if you will convince my boss to pay the staff (including me!)so i can buy a bicycle!! just joking. this is a great idea...already i don't drive 3 days aweek, but when i work i would have to take a couple of hours off daily to do errands here...working on the bike side of it towards just that end! i considered cashing in the car to fund the process but as i say my table is too much to put in the basket! so if anyone has any ideas how to get a bike for free i am all ears! Wheels, I just feel like saying "I scratch your front..." to this topic. LOL.But seriously. I have been walking a lot lately. Maybe 'cause I'm in Europe now. How about this: I have been feeding all the meat I would otherwise eat to the homeless animals here. kat, I would totally give you my old but still decent bike as I want to buy a new one. I don't know about your massage table though.

Now that it's morning, I have had time to think because this deal is not going according to plan, lol.I already give massages for free to those who need them & like BM, I walk my son to school & I talk with an ederly gent of my neighbourhood on an almost daily basis. That isn't a sacrifice for me though as I enjoy talking to him, he's quite cheeky What's left? I work at a non profit community art centre once a week & I also volunteer one or two hours of my time there & I thought that might be a way to go. What do you think honey? Do you have a local community centre that could be blessed with you for a few hours one week? Or here's one I consider pet karma... Whenever I see a lost doggy I return them to their owners, even if I'm going to be late for work. People really appreciate that one. In fact there is one particular German Shepard who jumps the fence every week just to go & hang out at my local cafe. His name is Bronson. We have become such good friends now that he walk me home after a coffee. How cool is that? IP: Logged |

Hi All,I'm not sure this post is in the right place, but I do think it's important to reach an agreement with people. I have a friend and we have pretty much fallen away from each other. I asked her to think about reconciliation because it's a shame that we have become indifferent and unkind to one another. I'm not really looking to ascribe blame at this point, just ways to fix things so we're both happy. If she is open to it ,I think we should try to mend the past. It really is sad that things ended up the way they did. This person has to learn to trust me and then we can work things out. If there is no trust then it's just becomes a game. And I just can't afford to play games anymore. So I hope she is ready to work with me and not against me any longer. We are really wonderful friends naturally if we just get out of the way and let things be. I am willing to forget the past if she is. I really think it's possible that we could be quite good for one another in many different ways. The only thing I ask is that she be as upfront with me as possible and try to help me too. At one time there was a certain kind of magic between us, I hope we can find that again. If not ,then maybe something new will develop that could posssibly be even more profound . Who knows? The thing is , it is a waste of time to hurt each other when we were really suited to be friends of a very high order. I really hope we can do this and turn things around. It's really up to her for the most part. I have faith in her and have high hopes. Either way I know I've tried and done my best!!!!

Welcome to LL, yesterday's winter -- I hope you work it out with your friend I’m in, Missy Wheels I think I could do the same deal as CPN, no driving from 6:30pm Friday until 7:00am Monday….. There’s a little convenience store two blocks away if we suddenly run out of anything and are near starvation All I might ask in return is a few words from thy voice of experience on the wonderful world of stir-fry: I’ve never really messed around with making a meal that way, and I’m prompted to ask because my 13yo has discovered that vegetables are indeed edible (a complete 180 on his part, I assure you!!) and I thought stir-fry might be a fun way to get him involved in cooking yon veggies…... In particular, what do you use for seasoning?? Do you have any WOCian secrets that could be revealed for a price?? As for my continuing saga of recycling at work, whenever I see recyclable paper in the GARBAGE can, I pull it out and put it in the recyclable paper bin. We have a compost bucket under the sink in the lunchroom at work and one of the fellas who owns a farm takes it home to his kitchen-garden, and that's cut down on at least 50% of the weight of garbage coming out of the office. Several of us who do a lot of printing save the printouts that are read, then tossed, and we use the blank side to print non-public inhouse documents; or just worksheets that you use, mark up then throw away. Our computer system at work insists on chucking out a completely blank page at the beginning of every print job, so we collect those and donate them (schools, churches or other non-profits are looking for free paper like this). No one throws away packing peanuts anymore -- we bring them into work to the giant packing crate where we save this stuff. If anyone needs packing materials to ship or mail a package (think, Christmas) we just take what we need out of the crate. There's been plastic, glass and metal recycling/bi-weekly collection in my neighborhood ever since I bought my house (11 years ago). The grocery stores collect used plastic grocery bags, and encourage bringing in your own cloth or other re-useable bag by giving you 10 cents off your bill for each re-usable sack you bring. Every little bit helps!! :-)) IP: Logged |

hmm - I don't think there are any trips I can take the bus to this week instead of my car. I commute to and from work with my car... public transit won't work, unfortunately. I did look into it before.I'll see if another trip comes up that I can walk to though IP: Logged |

Hey Spanks! You know I seem to be having tremendous bad luck with the volunteering. 6 months ago I asked a local trust if I could do some vegetation clearance locally - nothing. I emailed them to say "Hey! I emailed you" - nothing. Same with the local archaeological trust, didn't need to dig necessarily, admin work would have been fine too. Nothing. So I paid them a visit as they're in my street, they said they'd follow up - nothing. I have contacted two organisations since Yin posted her Volunteering thread a few weeks ago. Both were organisations for elderly people, to befriend an elderly person and do their shopping, to work in a hospital shop, community centre etc. Gave my phone number, told them I had a whole Friday EVERY WEEK to help out and that I didn't really mind what I did (there were a good few things to choose from) - nothing. Despite there being two major hospitals within 3 miles. So what's the deal there? Afflicted Neptune or something? I feel really ****** off about it actually. IP: Logged |
