Dear me circa 1981: Welcome to the world! I know it may seem loud and smelly and cold and bitter sometimes, but pay attention to the lady that is always singing to you and filling your tummy. She will always be here for you. That feeling you get when she holds you, remember that feeling. It will carry you through the cold times, and the scary times, and the times when you may not know just what to do. Things will be okay for you. Make the world your own and take care to share that feeling you get with others. You won’t be in this place that long so enjoy it and those that you encounter along the way. Dear me circa 2004: Take chances and be bold! You are stronger than you may realize. Don’t be tempted to put your faith only with others. You must be on your own sometimes. The things you will learn in these alone times will serve you well in the future. Do not be afraid to gain this strength and knowledge. People will have a lot of opinions and judgments on you and what you decide in life. Be proud of who you are and rejoice in that which you hold true. This cannot be taken away from you no matter how hard the obstacles you are up against. Things will be okay for you. Don’t stress too much when plans don’t go perfectly. Take pleasure in the mistakes you make and the imperfections you have. They make you unique and define your journey. Oh, but if you get the idea to bleach your hair in the summer, think twice… Seriously, bad idea… Dear me circa 2010: Practice patience. This is something that you are going to experience on a daily basis now. You must take the time to listen and really hear what is being said. Even the things that are not, pay attention to the silence, there are secrets and answers there. Remember that feeling from when you were a baby… that which made you feel safe and comfortable and took away fear. You must give that with all you have now and hope that your passing it along will make her journey beautiful and safe as well. Be easy on yourself, you cannot please everyone all the time. The quiet moments are special and few and far between, take advantage of them when they come, someday they will make you sad. Smile, laugh and remember that anything that spills can be cleaned, and if it stains, it will make an interesting story… Ghani

Dear me circa 1999:Be humble. Although it is good to be yourself and stand up for your beliefs, you need to learn to pick your battles. The squeaky wheel gets the oil they say, but it won’t be the good stuff… Learn the true meaning of friendship. Know that not everyone has to get along all the time on all accounts, the world is beautiful because of how many different souls there are in it. Respect others and they will in turn respect you. Don’t change to please anyone, but don’t push so hard at rebellion that you shove everyone too far away to ever get close to you. Let down your guard a little, not everyone is judging you. Spend more time with your family, they will be there when everyone else is gone.
