LOL, teasel, I didn't think anybody actually remembered that. How did I miss you? Did you have a different name?

lol, PA

(I'm laughing with you.)

Godzala certainly tests my equanimity, and, for that, I endeavor to be grateful. Without temptations, we would never have the opportunity to overcome temptations, or to increase in virtues. When I am perturbed to see the words "genital herpes", or anything else, on these boards, it just reminds me of how far I am from my goal. It humbles me. "It's not what you look at, but what you see." ~ Thoreau

"The monk must die to his neighbor and never judge him at all, in any way whatsoever. If someone does not think in one's heart that one is already dead three days and in the tomb, then that person cannot attain to this saying."

so which monk will you(generic) be, the one who carried the woman over the river or the one who carried the thought for miles afterwards, shutting god out in favour of criticism?

Good question.

Hopefully, the first.

What about you?

I'm having difficulty with this one:

"Instructing your neighbor is the same
as criticizing your neighbor."
~ Abba Poeman

The Abba goes on to offer
only words of instruction.

Also,
the distinction between
the sinner and the sin...

As it is written:
"Embrace the sinner, but shun the sin."

Are we judging the sinner,
when we see the sin?

That is,
when we "judge" that a sin
is being committed?

Secondly,

Are we judging the sinner,
when we denounce the sin?

Or is it only the sinner
who thinks so?

That is,

Is it only the sin,
which inclines us to think
that we, and not our sin,
is being denounced?

Oh, my head is spinning.

Take me back to the heart.

Some of the fathers questioned Abba Poeman saying: "If we see a brother in the act of committing a sin, do you think that we ought to reprove him?" The old man said to them: "For my part, if I have to go out and see someone committing a sin, I pass on my way without reproving him."

But he does not pass by
without seeing the sin,
or thinking of it as sin.

Or speaking against it,
if not to the sinner, then,
to his fellow monks.

Hmm...

I struggle to understand this.

when one attempts to spare or save another from their sins one prevents them learning-by-doing what DOESN'T work. ie you interfere with their karma or their learning process...and you overstep their boundaries which is a kind of sin in itself, especially when you remember that a sin is just a mistake, not a crime!

But isnt that exactly what people like Jesus do? Don't they speak out against injustice, falsehood, and foolishness, and attempt to remind us, or point us in the direction, of something deeply meaningful? How is it possible to be a teacher, or a healer, and not attempt to spare or save another from their sins?

I think I get where both kat and V. are coming from. One can speak to people about right and wrong. One can attempt to compassionately educated them, show them the way, whatever. Only the ones who are truly ready will have the heart to accept it.

So, we do have the moral obligation to speak and try to help but we can only help when the need for help is realized by the needy.

You may be right, Yin. Also, I'm not sure I agree with the notion that anything or anyone can intervene in a way that contradicts karma. If the words of a great teacher, or the actions of a true healer, only hinder you, and you must (or are determined to) learn by making your own mistakes, then, it's probably on account of your bad karma. On the other hand, if the words of a great teacher, or the actions of a true healer, benefit you, its probably on account of your good karma.

I have no problems with seeing the words "genital herpes" on the boards. I figure, it's better than seeing it in person.

Coffee is special too.

I'm interested in the poetry. You can mention buttocks or genital herpes. Just because.

Coffee knows this - I love coffee, even as a Mormon, I admit, I...I....I... sin. I drink coffee.

Spunk, I agree with you. There is only one Spunk and that is you. I love Coffee, but when he creates another 'spunk' in his life and it's not you, then I feel absolutely outraged.

How can Coffee, a wonderful man who loves horses and has tight buttocks (are the 2 related?), be so insensitive and even dare mention another spunk. It really goes against the spirit of LL. It goes against free speech and goes against Linda Goodman's Arian nature of being a great Arian conversationalist (as we know Aries is the sign of the conversationalist).

Coffee - shame on you - you can never shake your tight tush around me ever - well, youcan if you want to

My friend, Jesus, will no doubt answer your questions. You may be surprised, or even shocked by His answers.

Just send Him a prayer - He's probably hanging out with his prostitute or homosexual friends. But I know He will get back to you - He's pretty good at replying.

OMG!!!!! You would be an awesome poet!!!! You'd fit into the mold of great artists like Dylan and Cohen!!!

Don't matter about it now,
but feel my buttocks
that's all that matters
and my horses that i feed carrots to,
they matter,
Spunk matters,
Coffee matters,
and tight, tight, very tight buttocks are all that matters

I can see a future, Coffee
