I'm still keeping high-speed, but the cable has got to go. I was paying $111 a month, and they just raised it to $118, without adding new features! I'm just tired of these companies doing this when they know how the economy has been. It's just the principle of the whole thing, you know?

I'll miss it, I can't lie; even though I drone out flipping through the channels thanks to the awesome digital watch & surf feature.

Has any one else's cable gone up?

Have not had cable or television in over 12 years and only had either or both for maybe a total of 10 years during my 55 years to date.
After awhile you will not miss it.
I knew folks paying $179 or more a month years ago for "Dish"...

My roadrunner and basic cable is $20 a month. No land line though. It hasn't gone up in this house in years and years, I think the owner has a "friend" at the cable co. or something, because I was paying 70 something for the same service at my last house.

I hardly ever watch it though. I couldn't live without the internet, but tv, meh...

Having said THAT, I will be watching American Idol tomorrow night, but I don't think that is a cable station, or is it??

Not sure about AI, since I've never seen it. Sounds like you've got a good deal to me. I will miss watching live soccer and I just started viewing the PGA tour, but oh well.

The box, along with the remote, will be going back tomorrow. It's already been unhooked, and the channels only go up to 72. Yikes! Oh, and I'll have withdrawals from my true crime shows. And Celebrity Fit Club, and Dr Drew and his addicts. But, hey, I've got student loans to pay. Maybe I'll try Direct TV sometime. But I’m never going back to those crooks. At least it won’t be MY name on the bill if I do.

OH! I love Dr. Drew, I forgot about that one, yes, Sunday nights on VH1, but that is channel 62 here, and my basic cable goes to 66. LOL! Dennis Rodman and Heidi Fleiss this season, along with McKenzie Philips, it's gonna be a good one. Dennis was court ordered to go, and he refuses to speak, should be interesting indeed.

I remember losing all my channels too. I used to watch all these craft shows, and I thought I would just wither without them, but after awhile, you just kinda forget.

It's cheaper here, I get the full package for 40 quid (about 62 US dollars) but I don't think that's cheap. It's a luxury thing.

Personally I only watch one show a week and that is on the BBC, but the kids like their cartoons and grandpa likes the cricket which is now on cable. If there is sport on I want to watch I will be there too.

Call me boring, but I would rather spend a week slobbing in front of the French Open in my favourite armchair than sitting on the deck of a Cruise ship.

I wanted to get rid of TV all together. It cost me $5.00 less to get basic TV cable + cable internet rather than just cable internet.
What do you call that nonsense?

Now that tv is available online I am seriously considering cutting the cord.

Recently I added high speed and spent close to $30 just to make the change with the tacked on fees, + they charge a $5 a month modem fee.

We in the states knew this would happen once the signal went digital nation wide.
When you research DISH, and DIRECT you find a slightly lower cost overall. Only slightly.

Again, if your comp is fairly new, and a 15+ inch screen, you can watch most things for free online. If you find paying around 40$ ALREADY! for internet itself 'free'

Movies? Your local library rents those for around $3.00

I have not seen Avatar- even with a matinee price it was $11
I cannot afford this.
My cable has got to go.
People here spend close to 200 a month for phone + internet + cable tv [Comcast]

*edit actually it makes little difference about the comp - the connection itself is important to watch on-line

I so agree with this thread

Right now, I can afford $95/mo for dig HD cable, and I still have a teenager at home and a bfriend who does not have cable and enjoys mine, however, if push comes to shove, it will be THE FIRST luxury to go!

I recently tried to save myself $50/mo and go to dish, taking into consideration the possible outages, but in SO TX, probably would not happen too often, but I have too many trees and too steep a slope on the roof...sigh...

I tried!

The phone companies get me too, I recently called to cancle my home phone and just use the cell, but ended up keeping a streamed down line for 9$/mo, about $15 with taxes, unlimited incoming and 25 outgoing per month...saved me around $40/mo on my phone bill.

Anyway I do enjoy my cable, but could do without the luxury if I really had to.

When my eldest moved out, she had a kickass LCD tv, but could not afford cable, so she and her gfriend lived on movies for a year until they got cable. They became the movie experts for a while! She works fulltime and goes to college fulltime so she has little time for tv anyway, but now that they have cable, she sure does enjoy it...when they don't feel like going out.

great thread!

Yin; "What do you call this nonsense?" I call it a monopoly.

CPN; I have one question for you, did you smoke on the cruise???

Our library has DVD's for free, but you need to get there on thursday if you want anything even remotely new for the weekend.

Movies are ridiculously cheap at flea markets and garage sales, I have around 200. Storing them is my problem, but it is nice to have a big selection when there is nothing on, which is most of the time.

no gypsee, but i wanted too real bad. i took it back up on a vac to california. one year and two vacations on my saved money.

i wouldnt mind cutting the cable off again. my husband came with a dish and the dish bill is 147 for like 900 channels. all you need is discovery for the kid and history channel.

if it wasn't for dexter, i would cut it off.

everytime i see dog the bounty hunter i want to shoot the tv. if they busted on my property i would whip his wife's...never mind.

what services do you get for that huge price? we had cable here and it was 50/mo. which i think is high, always shop for the promo deals before signing up anyway.

but blue moon do you still have to pay a license to the gov just to run a tv? or is it included in the cable price?? i remember those frigging inspectors used to come to the door to try and catch people redhanded ... and they had those snooper vans that could sit outside and pick up your signal...

the way to do it, is i told myself smoke money is vacation money, cable money is vacation money, i didnt miss it before i won't miss it now, so i put it in separate account for vacations, then wala, didnt have to save for vacations.

it doesnt do the dishes or nothing! probobly 10 or so hbo's, 10 or so showtimes, seriously, it is a total waste of money.

i think they charge more because of high definition too, if i am not mistaken.

still

all boils down to what one wants/needs in her/his life.

sure it is quite the monopoly!

obviously!

tis, me thinks, we are aware as to the processes of "the monopoly" or not?

i think, i am, but am quite willing to partake in the offerings of such for now.

like i said, offers entertainment when i/my daughters/mybfriend desires.

back in the day, twas just an antenna...been seeing, lately, commericals for antenna tv..."let us be!"

now that i will have an issue with....

do not take from us what is awarded to public access.

one cannot force cable tv on me, but i should be able to choose, if i wish, standard antenna tv.

gosh....

such a debate

now...off to watch some cable tv..........

(while it still xists for me)

t~~~

*Lexx- You must get a lot done.

*GypseeWind- Yeah, I know. Heidi seems like a cool person, but she hasn’t gone through withdrawals yet, so we’ll wait and see. I’d like to strangle Karie Anne. Yeah, she’s been through a lot but so hasn’t everyone else.

Monopoly’s a good word for it.

*PeaceAngel- It’s crazy. Why are people so greedy? I’ll save over $800.00 a year!

*cpn_edgar_winner- That sounds wonderful. I’d love to do that, and congratulations on quitting satin sticks. I’m also an ex smoker.

900 channels? My God. Never seen the show, but I’m going to start reading the Dexter books that inspired it soon. We all carry a Dark Passenger, right?

*Yin- The lady at TimeWarner tried to get me to keep basic cable, which is $19.95 a month. But I wasn’t falling for it.

*lalalinda- Good to have company. They can take their prices and shove it up the ole brown eye!

*Node- I watch King of Queens online, which I’ll post my favs soon. Actually, we’re not really watching for free when we still pay for the internet-right?

I belong to a few libraries and am grateful for the free movies, but I always encounter scratches on the DVDs. I love Netflix, though.

*hippichick- My bfriend can’t stand Verizon, so he switched to Vonage.

*katatonic- Be careful of the promos, that’s how they getcha!
