Since my broke @ss can't afford a haircut right now and I needed one BADLY - and also wanted to freshen up my look...
I decided to look into how to cut your own hair at home. The last time I got my hair cut and colored, I went to a salon that uses only organic dyes etc and it cost me an arm and a leg. Never again. I havent ever been thrilled with the haircuts i've gotten and seeing as I'm artistic, I thought maybe I could do an even better job if I knew some basics. I always get long layers but my hair is so thick, it always seems heavy at the bottom and i can't stand the way it looks. I've explained this to the stylists and it still looks the same after. I needed volume and figured out how to achieve it - finally!

Anyway, after watching countless videos on youtube I decided to go for it! And I'm thrilled with the results. It took me a few hours and my roommate was getting nervous and yelling in at me to "stop cutting! next thing I know you'll have a mohawk." LOL because I was in there for awhile and with a beer or two.
But it looks GREAT and he agrees.

I mixed a few techniques i learned from a bunch of different videos, but one woman who really helped me out and I liked is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lq-TwajbJpY&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/user/notaditdot#p/u/8/EYMyJ-LR8so

So easy! (but i didnt stop there )

I watched a bunch of her videos and think she's adorable and has a lot of great tips. She's an actual hairdresser too, so knows what she's doing.

tb con't...

Anyway, for those with long hair, who usually get long layers cut into their hair, you might want to try these techniques at home too. Way cheaper and just as good - in my opinion better, than paying for a cut. An earth sign always says: 'if you want something done right.......!..."

I combined a bunch of techniques I learned from many videos to get the cut i wanted, but it was well worth it.

For years ive cut my own bangs & fringe and a few times tried to cut layers into my hair, but it never looked that great because i didnt know what i was doing. Now that i do know the proper way to go about it, i don't think i'll ever have anyone else cut me again.

Does anyone else cut their own hair here? Do share your stories/tips! & let us know how it goes if you try this

Good for you. Post a pic.

I cut and colour my own hair. Have been doing it for years, even when it was long. It's naturally really curly so I have been able to get away with any cutting imperfections.

I do the kids too. Last year the girls and I had blue streaks happening for a while. All good fun.

I have a pixie cut. There's a pic in KTAA. It's not the hardest cut to do myself. Basically, if I **** it up it's easy to cover up. Or have a bald patch. Nah, just stick some gel or whatever over it and it's done. Low maintenance. I won't pay to get that done though. No way. Saturn in Taurus in 2nd is a tight arse that way, and knows all too well about being broke.

Only my bangs.
I do it by cutting off what I can see hanging down, using no mirror.
Oddly, that method has resulted in the best bang trims!

I only cut my bangs. But now im in the process of letting them grow out. I have to decide soon because if they get to long i dont know if i will be able to do them. My hair is waist lenght so i let my husband trim the ends every 3 months or so

Yes. Mine is all the same length, about a third of a way down my back. I trim the ends every now and then.

I have done my own for years. About once a year I go and have a professional do and they don't "tut" too loudly.
Layered cut is quite simply;

Wash hair and when wet
Pull up all hair in a ponytail on top of your head. In centre if you want shorter layers or pull it to front of head for longer layers at the back.
Cut of end of ponytail in a straight line (as much or as little as you desire)
Remove elastic. Shake and go!

Cut my own hair, with clippers ;-) tho texturizing scissors are my best friend, as scissors will cut the whole thing, and once ya chop it's chopped lol but texturizing will thin it out and snip the hair short which is what i like about these scissors!

I gave myself a full haircut once, and it came out pretty good. I didn't keep doing it, because it was neither quick nor easy.

PA, youre really cute and your haircut look great too. Very playful, lively eyes.

Yeah my hair's a combination of wavy and straight, which helps to hide imperfections. I thinned it out cutting layers all over especially towards the top and midway, and my neck is thanking me now. A lot of hair was cut off, but I managed to keep the length and bring it back to life. Maybe i'll post a pic when i have some make-up on and have styled it.

Looks kind of like this:

Bunnies, yeah, who knew it was so easy?!

SunChild, maybe give the ponytail technique a shot sometime. It's pretty hard to screw up.

I didnt have a V-cut before, i just had the stylist cut it straight across with a few long layers because i straightened it alot. It was time for a change though and i'm happy with the result.

AG, no, not quick nor easy. Kind of fun though!

congrats on the discovery! i have a hairdresser lately, a friend who wanted to trade for massages. i have to say i was getting tired of doing my own - after 30+ years of it - but i could give her up anytime without being too upset. just being lazy and trading favours, always a nice thing!

long hair can be pretty daunting to style but i have to say that if i were paying the whatever it costs (she has never quoted me a price!) i would probably still be doing my own.

there have been a few times when i screwed up royally with medium length hair and had to go to someone to fix it up, but mostly it is a stress-free, cost-free skill that you can always fall back on.

Am waiting for a pic T

Now that I have a short style, looks like I will have to go to the hairdressers more often now - the price to pay for a cool neck in a hot humid summer!!!

Wow, I am really impressed at people like you, T, who put this much thought and research into something, because, obviously it produces favorable results!

Bravo!

I usually just hack of however much on an impulse, and then regret it later.

I'm a little scared, but I think I'll give it a try. I need a haircut now, so the timing's right. Thanks for providing the research, T. My Virgo Mars is all a-tingle.
