i love it. a lot. i colored my hair red and i love it a lot. it is my hair, tomorrow i may dye it green with purple ends and shave one side off. it is my hair.

when people say, it looked better blonde...with a smile....it is rude.

they don't understand that it is rude, i can tell, because they smile when they say it and act friendly.

i wonder how friendly they would act if i smiled back and said, you should do something about that grey............or...oooohhhhh ...someone needs a trim? or (gasp) have you been gaining weight...then they would see that they were being rude....or, hey cool uni-brow....but, I would not be rude like that.

i don't recall asking anyone if they liked my red hair. like i said, i love it. when they do that, it doesn't make me not like my hair, it makes me think they just aren't that nice of a person.

rant over.

You are quite a gorgeous woman. I would love to see a pic of you now with the red hair. I am into dark hair that's been hennaed myself. One can only see the color when the sun hits it.

yeay red hair!! Or green...purple..etc..

Funny you posted this. I've been thinking of dying just the ends of my hair a deep blue color. My only problem is work. They won't accept colors that aren't "natural". So I may go with dying the ends black instead. I'm a brunette.

But if it makes YOU happy, screw everyone else, right? It's YOUR hair!

Surely there are techniques to deal with bad attitudes and provocations/ projected bad energy in general. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to handle difficult/ sensitive situations like that?
Do you just smile and say something equally hurtful? i.e. the gained weight reference.
It obviously depends on the situation/ person/ circumstances etc. but is there anything one can do to protect themselves from comments like that?
The simple conformist behavior saves us a lot of trouble and sometimes helps in getting the work done without the distraction of other people's energies but what is the right balance?
I am rambling here as well, forgive me, also soul-searching...
How do you find a happy medium? Or is happy medium a process not a state or an end point?

I'm also thinking - there are charismatic people out there that command respect (maybe Saturnians, also passionate types in general) who you wouldn't even think of saying something like that to. The charismatic person could shave half their head and they will own it and carry it with such dignity and pride that we wouldn't dream of questioning it. So then, is it a matter of self-esteem? Can everyone pull it off?

i just smile and say nothing.

i would never be so rude....i was just venting..and saying what if i said...what if i answered back....thus and thus...

i just don't get it though, like why go out of your way to walk in my office and tell me that?

i would never tell anyone it looks like thier butt is getting bigger, or thier grooming could use a little UMPH...., for one, i really don't care, for two, i really don't care, and thirdly, i don't care.

maybe i should be flattered. or should i say thank you for letting me know what you think, i will certainly take your advisement into considereation prior to coloring my hair next time. or i am so glad you told me that, i was just finishing taking a gallop poll and need one more harris to complete the concensus.

i was tired of the blonde and it was tired of me. as long as you stick to a warm or cool color depending on skin tone, you should be ok.

who really gives a crap, it is hair for crying out load. it is meant to be dyed fried and flipped to the side.

what are these women gonna talk about when i move to a nudist colony and decide to live off the land? people just look for stuff to talk about. and sometimes are not at all considerate or nice, in fact, seeming to go out of there way to not be. almost makes me want to go more extreme.

maybe...who cares. it is an awesome day and i got a great parking spot....and great shoes...feeling pretty lucky with this fiery red hair.....

You must be joking.

I've seen your picture. You are a stunner. I'm sure women in your office are jealous of you and everything that you do regarding your appearance. That's why they take the trouble to come into your office. You draw attention to yourself. Nothing wrong with that.

wink away - they shouldnt be able to do that to you. it is discriminatory. blue is my natural color, i am feeling blue today and it matches my blouse.

.....but i have heard of people getting fired for smoking cigarettes on the off time. the office is now non smoking, but ..the do nicotine tests and fire anyone who doesnt quit smoking by a certain date. to me that screms...Unfair, lawsuit time...but, i guess it is ok....wierd office rules...

how do they know what is natural? what next -only neutral clothing can be worn into the office, to promote a natural vibe. please leave colored clothing in the car... tan and taupe is proper attire. white and black will be tolerated, but not worn together.

my daughters change haircolor so much i can't remember which one is the blonde.,,and neither can anyone else...i thought she was blonde, no my other daughter is blonde, i though she had dark hair, no that was last week. the only thing that stays the same is the fact that it will change.

oh yay i would like to see a picture too. i expect it suits you at least as well as blonde...

that rule about people not being able to smoke - cigarettes???are you kidding me?
cigarettes are legal and what people do when not at work is their own business...

they can say no smoking during breaks i guess if the smell offends clients but testing for it...THAT i believe is against the law and though i can't remember where it defiles people's right to decide these things for themselves.

do you know it is also against the law to even demand information on whether employees have been vaccinated for flu, for instance? my nurse sister has been through that one ... was asked to sign a paper that said she had or hadn't been jabbed...they are not even allowed to ASK!

as far as being rude as a demonstration my experience has been that rude people do not GET that THEY are ever rude, but they will consider YOU extremely so if you try it!! MAYBE if you bat it right back after their comment...like a dog, you have to strike at the moment or they won't register what they've done wrong!!

seriously on the cigarattes. it is a large company, tier 1 auto supplier..cant smoke at home or off work ...thiuer health insurance premiums drop if all employees are non smokers, so they have incentives and after the company quit date, whoever had nicotine in thier systems were fired. a really large company with a lot of employees. i didnt think it fair either...some had been there many years, and were only smoking away from company property. in their own homes or cars.

Fired For Smoking Cigarettes?
Employee Questions Company's Policy
POSTED: 11:21 pm EDT September 28, 2006
UPDATED: 11:41 am EDT October 2, 2006

BOSTON -- If you're an ethnic minority or a pregnant woman, you're protected by law from discrimination in the workplace. But what if you're a smoker?

Team 5 Investigates has found employers can legally extinguish your employment for a host of reasons that have nothing to do with your job performance.

NewsCenter 5's Sean Kelly reported that Scott Rodrigues has been smoking for 15 years. He said that he didn't expect to hear, "You're fired."

"They said, 'Because you have nicotine in your system, you're fired"'" Kelly said.

"I said, 'Well, I'm going to try and call corporate and see what I can do about it.' And they said, 'Well, actually, you are terminated. There's nothing you can do about it," Rodrigues said.

Last month, Rodrigues was still considered a new employee by the company, Scotts Lawn Service in Sagamore Beach. He had a uniform and earned a paycheck. Then, the results of his drug test showed that he's a smoker.

"They were trying to have a smoke-free company, but no one explained to me that they'd be drug testing for nicotine," he said.

That means employees cannot smoke at work or in their private life. Scotts said it is paying to help current employees quit. Rodrigues' boss showed him the door.

"They're legal, and if we can smoke cigarettes legally, I don't think they should be able to say, 'We don't want people smoking, so we're going to give you a drug test now, and if you have nicotine in your system, you're done,'" Rodrigues said.

According to the company, it's an economic issue. The company said it is trying to reduce escalating health care rates, and it claims each smoker could cost the company an additional $4,000 a year. That raises insurance premiums. Representatives said, "It's unfair for us to ask our employees to pay for the cost of smoking."

"The question isn't just smoking off the premises. The question is, can an employer regulate an employee's behavior when the employee is not on the job?" Boston University health law professor Leonard Glantz said.

Glantz called it bigotry. First, it's the smokers; next, it could be people who are obese, skiers or people who ride motorcycles. Don't they present health risks, he asked?

"Can an employer say, 'If you have a bumper sticker on your car for a Democrat, that I am going to fire you because I think Republicans are better for my business'? Those arguments are exactly the same as the argument for restricting smokers," Glantz said.

At least 28 states have laws against firing smokers. Some of them restrict employers from banning any legal activity a worker does during off hours. Massachusetts is not one of them, which means the chance of Rodrigues getting his job back has all but burned out.

this is one instance. the compnay i was talking about is norplas and magna...big companies with multiple locations!

yes well hopefully the insurance companies WILL be regulated so some of this nonsense can stop. though the way things are going they will be building jails for smokers soon. the self-righteous bastardos. the smokers should be given the option to get their own insurance...that is the issue isn't it?

i still don't think it is legal. he should appeal to the law not corporate..

the balding, the greying, the gaining of weight...

these are things people don't like
about themselves and are sensitive about
so it's obviously rude to criticize them

they are criticized constantly --
they know society usually regards these
things as unattractive, not just for them,
but, for most people

its not a question of taste
or a choice based on tastes

these are things they struggle with

they are not intentional decisions
like dying your hair.

they are compulsive decisions,
and the natural effects of aging.

so its not the same.

still, i agree, its rude to say
they dont like your hair, especially
if you havent asked for an opinion.

i like red hair.

I'm sure you look beeeyoouuutttifffulllll, CPN.

Yes, Yin, there are ways to deal with people like this....ask any Merc in Scorp.

It's sorta the backhanded, suggested-but-not-really-flip-it-around-on-you-tactic.

Like, when my Aqua friend, ahem, said to me, after I died my hair black, (*note-it's darn near black anyway, and I just felt like making the summer sun dyed parts match the rest, no biggie) anyway, she said with a look like she just ate poop, "huh, wow, your hair....it's...ummm....why did you do THAT, you look like Elvira!!!!"

and I smiled and said, "Nancy, if you are suggesting that I have big boobs and can get any man I want, why don't you just come right out and say it, honey?"

She shut up.

See, I didn't have to insult her, at all. Though I could, and would like to on many occasions, but I won't....

RE: The smoking. GRRRRRR. First they took it out of bars, and over half the bartenders I am friends with are now unemployed, cuz, after you worked all day, you want to SIT down and enjoy your happy hour, not freeze your tush off outside. So, when the smoking left, the customers left. It was bad.

When I worked at the Doc's office, we had to smoke outside, no problem, I understand, it's an office. THEN>>> the patients complained to the Doc, that those of "us" (ewwwww, the yucky, gross, usssss) who smoked, had smelly hands, and they didn't like it.

My doctor said, "I'm sorry you feel that way, but I refuse to work with an office full of women who are having nicotine fits, it's hard enough working with an office full of women to begin with!" Love her.
