I have been familiarizing myself with all that research on mushrooms. It is truly fascinating.
After all it is thanks to mushrooms that we have penicillin.

"However, several others reported the bacteriostatic effects of Penicillium earlier than Fleming. The use of bread with a blue mould (presumably penicillium) as a means of treating suppurating wounds was a staple of folk medicine in Europe since the Middle Ages."

Actually I did know that they found penicillin on the fungi growing on bread. They teach that in HS.
My only mistake was that I said mushrooms (fungi with stems) not the more general fungi and then chose not to correct the misunderstanding thereafter as it wasn't worth arguing over.

But yes, thank you for the quote: "However, several others reported the bacteriostatic effects of Penicillium earlier than Fleming. The use of bread with a blue mould (presumably penicillium) as a means of treating suppurating wounds was a staple of folk medicine in Europe since the Middle Ages."
That I didn't know.
