From what I've read, Patrick Suskind is a misanthropic recluse much like his character Jean-Baptiste Grenouille in the "Perfume:..." And if we speculate that he drew from personal experience to create these characters (see also the main character in "The Pigeon") then he may just have some unusual sensitivity to the world. A twisted, odd, pessimistic view - the result of oversensitivity gone wrong. At least I prefer to think so. Some of his stuff is unreadable.I agree on David Mamet or at least on your view of his book. He's an ******* . IP: Logged |

lol suskind's misanthropy is particularly obnoxious for being of a lower sort. it is not the misanthropy of "the higher man", which is frequently conquered by, and transmuted into, benevolence, -- but a very common, university acquired, self-consciously intellectual, secular humanist, elitist, establishment sort of misanthropy. in his books i see the depiction of a world encased in glass, preserved in gas, textures and smells evoked with conventional expertise, but nothing honest and innocent, nothing from the heart. he gives me the impression of a man who has a strong disgust, and perverse skepticism, towards higher purposes, or endeavors which seek to involve and benefit more than just oneself.
mamet is just a d*ck.

Suskind - a less-evolved Aries? It's quite possible. Maybe due to his unaspected Mercury in Pisces? His books lack humanity which I think is fascinating. Anybody else read him? Opinions? IP: Logged | |
