I have family (and family friends) in several places in California - including Crescent City and the San Francisco area. Good thoughts and prayers to everyone out there.

It doesn't look like California is the most in danger. They're concerned with Hawaii first. Then South and Central America, and Mexico. The United States west coast and northward are under a lesser advisory.

Hours after Chile, a sizeable earthquake hits Argentina
By MARCELO BALLVE

The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a 6.3 magnitude quake that struck around midday in the northwest province of Salta, Argentina. This is far away from the epicenter of the Chile quake, over 1,500 kilometers by my eyeballing of google maps, but the Buenos Aires Herald is reporting it as an aftershock. In a story, it quoted Salta locals:

“We haven’t felt anything like this in 30 years,” journalist Francisco Mattus said.

“It was very strong, especially for people living [in] high rise buildings. Walls moved and things started falling over the furniture.”

Salta province, with vineyards, colonial cities, and mountains, is a popular tourist area. The Herald, an English-language publication, is also reporting that cell phone service is out but that there’s no major damage.

well the newsfolk are making the most of it!
though the tsunami in hawaii is more of a non-event ...

"QUAKE LEAVES WORLD IN PERIL!!"

"One bewildered resident, Fernando Abarzua, whose tower block collapsed, stood in the street and said: "I was on the eighth floor - and then all of a sudden I was down here"

i hope if i am ever in an earthquake i will be able to say that!! what an amazing experience...and since they say "bewildered" i am reading "unhurt" between the lines...

one story pointed out that chile is a MAJOR earthquake zone and MOST OF THEIR BUILDINGS ARE NEW AND DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND this kind of thing...tho i dunno how often they get one this big!!

What most folks do not realize is that there are earthquakes every day on planet Earth.

you're right, LEXX, last year there was one in the midlands of england and everyone was shocked because it is so rare...only to be told by the geologists that they are in fact very common, but in england they are usually so deep no one notices them!

8.8 is pretty large tho!

the hawaiian tsunami appears to have been a storm in a teacup...
