Listing all those empty homes out there

Hey, do you have a Twitter account? Have you ever noticed those messages in which people tell you where they are? Pretty annoying, eh. Well, they're actually also potentially pretty dangerous. We're about to tell you why.

Don't get us wrong, we love the whole location-aware thing. The information is very interesting and can be used to create some pretty awesome applications. However, the way in which people are stimulated to participate in sharing this information, is less awesome. Services like Foursquare allow you to fulfill some primeval urge to colonize the planet. A part of that is letting everyone know you own that specific spot. You get to tell where you are and if you're there first, it's yours. O, and of course there's badges..

Nobody tweets on here?
OH, let me guess, nobody tells their location in their tweets, right?

I never know what to Tweet about, but even if I did tweet my location my followers would have to know where I live, and they'd have to trust that my being out of the house means that everyone is out of the house.

Good points. However, if you follow somebody who likes to share their location all the time, if you follow them consistently, you could probably pinpoint their home. Have you seen those people tweeting about exactly where they are with pictures and everything? Scary.

Nobody I follow on Twitter updates with pictures of their locations all the time. I don't know if those people are in the minority or what.

Other tips similar to this:

- Don't put your loved ones in your phone under pet names as a thief might text them for things like your ATM pin number and so forth. Without a voice it's really hard to distinguish the person's identity (unless there are spelling quirks).

- Don't program your car GPS with an address called "Home." If someone steals your car, they would know that you're out (they stole your car while you were out), they would know your address, and they'd probably have your garage door opener.
