Oh goody, questions,

Video #1 Noir Desir
ok, the lead singer is the guy who beat his Actress/girlfriend to death, correct?

He went to jail, had his house burned down and is now out, correct?

Are they still making music?
Has France put the incident in the past and are you still buying their music?

I've always wondered what a Frenchman's point of view would be regarding that incident.

Thanks

hmmm, yeah it's him. well, I think right now the band is "celebrated" for its past succeses, I haven't heard that they released any new album yet. I'd expect it to be fairly talked about if it happened. the accident/crime was VERY MUCH covered in the news but it was as much because it was in a foreign country as it was about their "celebrity". her mum is famous too, well all her family is in the ffrench cinema, so this side had a lot of media coverage. so I suppose, as usual, french opinion, if such thing exist was more tolerant with him because of that. like the devil's advocate. but to be honest, he doesn't have a good reputation. people have been shocked by this "accident".

I think in france the event is in the past as far as the old songs and their music before that happened. people appreciated then and still appreciate their music of before. I'm not sure if it won't have an impact on their FUTURE music. I think it will but who knows???

I'm very impressed by your knowledge of french music. your first link, johnny hallyday, is the SUPER big rock star here. probably because he took off in the sixties and bridged the gap between two opposing sides of that era, the pop cheesy respectable stars of the time and the more "out-there" one

when he'll die, it could very well be a day off for every one, he's that big. I don't like him particularly but anyone above 40 is a fan, or they are not into modern culture like my mum and listen to folk musique like this . in fact I've hbeen listening to this precise tune, and many other like that, for as long as I can remember. that's summer holidays in the family for me.

ooops, back to bertrand cantat, as a frenchman, my opinion of the incident is that it's tragic, that's how karma is made. a mistake. I wouldn't judge him for that because that would be too easy to do. but it will always be associated to his name. I kind of feel sorry for him. sad story. nevertheless the music of before was there before all this, and it was great music. I guess if he did the same type of music it would seem like he hasn't understood anything, but then I think the french opinion would be seriously AGAINST him. I can't imagine him doing the same type of angery rock. really. I'm pretty sure if they do anything, it will be more mellow (right word?)

The US may not know who Johnny Hallyday is but Las Vegas certainly does.
It baffles me why he isn't big here either. I know he also acts, because I've seen his film
Man on the Train (L'Homme du Train) which I thought was great.
He should be doing films like Jean (my other boyfriend) Reno.

re: your mom's music, exellent, if I listened to that during the day, I'd always be in a good mood and putt around the house and get things done faster.
and have a glass of wine.

here's another great one for all things French

now, I want to highjack my own thread

let me make you discover some french artists or songs.

this song comes from one french or french canadian musical called "starmania". it was sang by daniel balavoine, who was a rebel and an engaged artist (an iconic figure)
anyway, this song is now sang here by gregory lemarchal who was a winner of the equivalent of pop idol. he died a few years after reaching fame from mucoviscidose

this song is from "les enfoirés" similar to "bast@rds" they are a group of artists (singers, actors, comedians) that reunite every year for 20 years so far to make a charity concert for the association created by coluche, a famous comedian of the 80's in favor of the poorest of the poor. the association, "les restos du coeur" "the restaurants of the heart" give free food. it has become a major event every year.

in this clip, there are some famous artists mixed with some volonteers of the association.

that makes me cry every time. it's so powerful I think.

here if you don't speak french you obviously miss something. calogero has great lyrics. he's very inspired. this song talks about the end of the world and its unending ending...

I try to find artists that are fairly recent, like in this last decade or still alive artist. benabar is one. is this new type of singer, no more complexed of singing in french. cause we've been / are invaded by englo-saxon culture and especially regarding cinema and music. I don't find it that bad, unless it threatens the french creativity and makes us all "the same".

benabar is french, embracing his frenchness singing songs about how it's great in the countryside, and he's very "simple", not the intellectual snob but a down to earth man. he's got something refreshing about him.

this song is about him asking his girlfriend to find an excuse to stay at home together and don't go to the diner they're invited to.

cali is an engaged leftist artist. probably communist. I'd just say ENGAGED

this song is about love not requited anymore.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd4CVVitCZU

among other artists, manu chao is one of the most engaged. his name is almost naturally associated with leftist alternative* movement since his outspoken support of alter-mondialists movement. (anti-globalization in english ?)

he used to be part of a group called "la mano negra" now he's alone and many of his song are in spanish since I think he's from spanish origins. I bet he's famous in latin america.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvdhOdd4UmU

*there are some real alternative band and singers but I don't know them as well. I couldn't name them. those here that I mention "alternative" are mainstream-alternative.

thomas dutronc is fairly alternative. in the sense of doing traditional french pop but with a twist, marginal side to it. the guitar here in the style of gypsee's music is an example.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd8YIeeJ9WY

this song by renaud is so sweet. enjoy...

renaud started being famous in the eighties. he's had a bad boy reputation since he became alcoholic after his break up I think. but now he's found love and sing again. this is one of his old songs.

you probably know mc solar, he started being famous in the 90's

he's more poet than rebel in the sense that he doesn't come across as angry but he plays with words to make beauty.

to finish this non exhaustive list of french artists, tryo. when I was 20, they used to be an underground-potsmokers band and in this last decade it became famous nationwide.

their motto would be "legalize it!!!"
