The Island = A form of Purgatory? Also, if Ben didn't go in the church, where do you all think he went? Did he stay in purgatory?

I'm having computer problems, so let's see if this posts...

I think the island life and the flash-forwards were real. The flash-sideways was some sort of holding place/new life created for them all. Jack's dad indicated that they hadn't all died at the same time.

I've been skimming a thread at Television Without Pity, and just before my computer shut down on me once again, I read a post in which someone suggested that Hurley had created the alternate life for everyone (I don't know about that).

I love Hurley, and that he asked Ben to help him look after the island.

The island was not purgatory, it was the most important part of their real lives. That's why the connections between people were so strong that their souls moved as a group.

The "sideways flash" parts from this season (their lives lived as though the plane had landed with Ben and Locke as teachers and Miles & Sawyer as cops, etc.) might be viewed as a purgatory or bardo. The sideways life offered each person a way to work out their issues (Sawyer working on the good side of the law, Locke being the one at fault in his relationship with his father, etc.). And as each person was "woken" by their constant, they remembered their "real" life and understood the sideways life was not real. They also then remembered they had agreed to meet at the church. Some of the people had been in the sideways life for a long time, and some for shorter periods because in the real world they all died at different times and the sideways life isn't tied to linear time.

Ben stayed behind because he wasn't through working out his issues with the Roussou women. He decided he wanted to continue to father Alex as he should have, and to be the partner Danielle deserved and the sideways life gave him the opportunity. He knows it isn't "real," but he still needs the virtual experience before he can move on. I think Ben, even more than Sayid, needs to know he's a good person and once he makes things right with Alex and Danielle he'll move on. That's why he didn't go into the church with everyone else. I think a good example of how Ben isn't fully ready is in his exchange with Locke outside the church when Ben *needs* forgiveness. Locke is puzzled because he already knows it doesn't matter, but Ben doesn't get that yet.

I don't think Hurley created the sideways life. That doesn't make sense in a lot of ways. I do love that Hurley was the ultimate good guy and that he saw the good in Ben and offered a way for Ben to begin his redemption. I loved how Ben went from being power hungry and wanting to rule the island to willingly serving someone else for a greater good.

What an episode! I cried each time someone "woke up." Especially Sun and Jin! And of course I sobbed through the last 10 minutes. Right after, I was shocked and even angry. But the more I think on it, the more beautiful it becomes. It's incredible that I cared so much about these characters, that millions of other people cared so much as well. The only part that I really, really disagree with is that Vincent should have been in that church! But, now that I think on it more I think perhaps he is waiting for Walt who was his first best friend. So I'm even okay with that.

I don't think he did either. I think the person suggested it, because he was so kind-hearted.

I agree with everything you've written. I also wanted to know where Vincent was (maybe he was with Walt, since he was missing as well). I was hoping to see him there, though.

There are a LOT of unanswered questions tho! With that said I was still satisfied with the ending.

Well, your questions probably won't be answered in the extra 14 minutes unless they're things like, "What kind of shirt will Hurley wear as Island Protector?" or "Do Hurley and Ben get to wear sheriff badges?"

I still have questions, too. There was no way for them to wrap everything up since there were years of loose threads. However, I do like that it allows for people to come up with their own answers. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a book released within a year about the unsolved mysteries and theories or absolute answers from the producers.
