From- How is Score Kept in golf: quote: Scoring in golf is sometimes a mystery to those unfamiliar with the sport because in golf - unlike most other sports and games - it's the person with the lowest score who wins.
"But golf scoring is as simple as can be. Every time you take a whack at that little white ball, that's a stroke. Every time you make a stroke, count it. At the end of each hole, add up your strokes for that hole and write it down. At the end of the round, add up the strokes for each hole and, there you have it, your golf score. Score in relation to par is also very easy to understand and compute. Each hole is given a number representing "par" - the number of strokes it should take a skilled golfer to finish that hole. If the par is 4 and you make a 5, then your score in relation to par is 1-over. If the par is 4 and you make a 3, then your score in relation to par is 1-under. If par for the course is 72 and you finished with a 92, then your score is 20-over."

everything I know about golf I learned in a Kevin Costner movie Quotes from Tin Cup:
Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy: Well, I tend to think of the golf swing as a poem. Roy: The critical opening phrase of this poem will always be the grip. Which the hands unite to form a single unit by the simple overlap of the little finger. Lowly and slowly the clubhead is led back. Pulled into position not by the hands, but by the body which turns away from the target shifting weight to the right side without shifting balance. Tempo is everything; perfection unobtainable as the body coils down at the top of the swing. Theres a slight hesitation. A little nod to the gods. Dr. Molly Griswold: A, a nod to the gods? Roy McAvoy: Yeah, to the gods. That he is fallible. That perfection is unobtainable. And now the weight begins shifting back to the left pulled by the powers inside the earth. It's alive, this swing! A living sculpture and down through contact, always down, striking the ball crisply, with character. A tuning fork goes off in your heart and your balls. Such a pure feeling is the well-struck golf shot. Now the follow through to finish. Always on line. The reverse C of the Golden Bear! The steel workers' power and brawn of Carl Sandburg's. Arnold Palmer! Romeo Posar: Unnhh, he's doing the Arnold Palmer thing. Roy: End the unfinished symphony of Roy McAvoy Roy : Sex and golf are the two things you can enjoy even if you're not good at them.
Molly: Roy, Roy, Roy, you don't have any inner demons. What you have is inner crapola, inner debris... garbage... loose wires, a few... [laughs] Dr. Molly Griswold: horseshi1t in staggering amounts. Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy: Does my inner child need a spanking? _______________________________________ I have seen this movie soo many times I know the words to the song. IP: Logged |
