A portable gallery wall. I'm looking to build one of these to use at art shows and festivals, but am not sure how to go about doing it or what materials might be best. It needs to be easy to assemble, very sturdy and lightweight. I'm thinking maybe steel rods with some sort of connector i can take apart and put together somewhat quickly and easily. I imagine i can find all the parts i would need to construct something like this at the hardware store or Home Depot, but I'm not sure where to begin. Any suggestions? You can see what they typically look like at this link: http://crilex.com/home/portable-art-gallery-portable-art-gallery-walls-c-81_85 IP: Logged |

This is the cheapest one at almost a thousand dollars. I cant afford that and think i could come up with my own. When i was doing shows a couple of years ago I used a wooden room divider/privacy wall that i drilled holes into and hung the pictures on. It didnt work out so well and almost blew over many times with strong gusts of winds. So, i'd like to get something going on that will be a lot sturdier and easier to lug around.... IP: Logged |

Suggestions on building a tent would be great too. LOL I found one on craigslist someone was selling really cheap but i didnt jump on it and now it's gone. Maybe i'll find another one like that before the show. They too are very expensive brand new.IP: Logged |

I think you can make something similar to an aviary cage (???) (without the top panel) using wire mesh and wood. IP: Logged |

Bingo. Lot's of ideas here that I think i'll be able to work with. I like the idea of using screen door panels too. Luckily I have a month to build it. Thanks Duex! http://www.finchinfo.com/housing/build_your_own.php IP: Logged |

If you live by a Lowes or Home Depot, you could see if they have some thick metal or wooden poles that would not tip over (and they can cut whatever you need to the appropriate size). The panels themselves you can make from foamcore sheets (again, Home Depot, Lowes or any art store should be able to help you cut them to the right size - and if you need two put together to make one, you can use an industrial stapler or hardware binders). Just cover the foamcore sheets with fabric or indoor/outdoor low turf carpet (like a berber), and use carpet glue or glue tape to hold. That might work. Good luck! It's sad that displays and portfolios are so expensive as they're basic necessities in getting an art career off the ground (only after which can most people afford these things). IP: Logged |

I'd be asking someone at the hardware shop for some help. They'll understand that you're on a tight budget and will help you with the best materials, and can cut everything to size for you. They could also give you ideas that maybe you haven't thought of that would work for you. I know here in Oz the big hardware shops have Do It Yourself brochures available for free - and maybe you can get some ideas from something like that.I think it's brilliant. Good luck with it. I wish I could do what you do, but we all have different gifts. My presence here has been sparodic most of the year, so I don't know, are you still tattooing? Good luck with it all. IP: Logged |

Abs, thanks! I'm going to take a closer look at that in a few! Neat-O!Musette, yeah, i was thinking it might be best to consult with one of the Home Depot workers and see what kinds of ideas he or she may have. Yes, it's expensive and a few years ago I might have let that hold me back, but not now. Im determined to make it happen! Thanks. PA, thanks for the good luck wishes. My presence here is also sporadic even though ive been around alot lately. Yes, I still tattoo here and there for close friends or people i have already started work on. I left the shop I was at and got offered another gig at a new, more local shop. Then I decided to leave them and focus on painting alone. I might go back when the time is right. Right now I have to try and make a real living. Doing work full time for free doesnt put food on your table. And I was limited in what I could do creativly in that field. So back to square one. Something one of my tattoo artist buddies wrote recently: "letters, letters, letters. I used to be an artist, now i'm just a writer. :'( " refering to all the lettering people want done so often. kinda sucks really. IP: Logged |

TI understand the clash between doing what is in your heart and it not putting food on the table. I do volunteer work which I just love and lately have been doing some casual work which just wrings my soul when I'm doing it, but it pays the bills and helps. You gotta do what you gotta do. And along the way hope that they merge. IP: Logged |

Yes, I found that it's painting or expressing what's inside of me is what i need to do. Even though that doesnt put food on the table right now either. It may eventually and I am willing to work towards it. It's not even about willing to, really. I do it because I have to. I might die if i dont. And really i'm not worried about food on the table anymore or not. I should know enough by now to know that if you are living your purpous then the rest will be taken care of. I decided tattooing random words, Tazmainian Devils and tribals on people was not what I was meant to be doing here. It was stifling to me.....and is that way for so many others. Quite an experience though and i met some good people and learned a new medium. I'd rather focus on my favorite ones now though. IP: Logged |
