twice in the same store, evEN!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38126776/ns/us_news-weird_news/?Gt1=43001

The luckiest person in the world?

Look no farther than Joan Ginther, at least when it comes to winning the lottery.

Since 1993, the 63-year-old woman has won four windfalls on the Texas Lottery, each time winning more than $1 million for a total of $20.4 million.

The most recent win that has everyone talking: $10 million in a scratch-off game called “$140,000,000 Extreme Payout.”

Not only has each ticket been bought in Texas; two of the tickets have been bought in the same store, right in Bishop, Ginther’s town of birth where neighbors say she comes back every so often to visit her father and, apparently, try her luck.

“This is a very lucky store,” Bob Solis, the manager of Times Store, told the Corpus Christi, Tex.,-based Caller Times as news about the most recent win began to circulate Friday. The owner said the store sells an average of 1,000 tickets a day.

4 Texas Lottery wins, $20.4 million
Ginther’s first windfall came 17 years ago, when she won $5.4 million in a “Lotto Texas” game. She opted to have that sum paid out annually over 19 years....(more)

wow. I wonder if she's blown through all that money, and that's why she keeps playing?

she used scratcher cards...so i don't think numbers come into it unless the dates when she bought them apply. i find it reassuring to know that some people have had multiple successes...i think a lot of lotto winners continue to play, even though they don't necessarily need the money...

Whoops, I failed today's reading comprehension test!

I think a lot of lotto winners do keep playing, which makes sense as if you're lucky enough to win once then you might be lucky enough to win twice. Anyone see those news reports on lotto winners a few years back? They followed up on big lottery winners in the UK and US and the majority of them said they felt the lottery had ruined their lives in many ways. Most of them had spent the money very quickly. I'm sure there are winners who are happy they won, and who made wise investments. Maybe the happy winners are more low-key and didn't want to be interviewed?

yes winning the lotto is one of the classic examples used by people who believe in "prosperity consciousness" ie if you are messed up around money winning the lottery can be the worst thing that ever happens to you. there was a couple in england (or wales) in the 60s who won the lottery. she is known as the "spend spend spend girl" because on being interviewed and asked what she was going to do with it that was her ebullient response. 30 odd years later she was interviewed again. the husband died in a drunk driving incident, something terrible happened to most of her family, and she basically lost it all and had to start over from a much worse place than she'd been in when she won it.

whereas if you already have your money stuff worked out it can be a great manifestation, but so the saw goes, you won't be needing to win the lotto anyway!!

i think i saw the same show, musette, some of the winners actually figured out how to make it work, others were just bowled over by it, developed addiction problems, or forgot to save the tax money - being wealthy comes with all kinds of challenges that being poor does not include.

i had a friend who lived in a very expensive building in nyc years ago whose neighbours won the irish sweepstakes. he said the mail piled up in front of their door - begging letters and sales pitches. they moved and left no forwarding address!

Many lottery winners get those letters or phone calls begging for money from family and friends they haven't met, or haven't had contact with in years. If I won, I would share with the people whom make my life wonderful on a daily basis, but I wouldn't want to have to sift through the scammers and the "I knew you in first grade" folks. The smart thing would be to go to a legal firm first and have a generically-named trust set up before claiming. That way the lawyer can claim the money for the trust and the winner's identity can be hidden, and the winner can avoid having scammers come out of the woodwork!

One time I dreamt of winning the lottery. But in the dream I saw the specific place (without its name of course!) I had a detailed description of the building and the road... etc. all but the names. And I also had the numbers. I drove around with my husband because in the past he drove a cab and he new the area. I described the store in detail from the dream, and we never found it! I never played that day, and I never watched to see if my numbers came up. Guess I should have, huh?

Heard about this story about a month ago on a show called "How the lottery changed my life". The hour long show features various lottery winners, of big jackpots and how their lives have been impacted for better or worse.

BTW not all states allow winners to claim lottery winnings using a "blind trust" which sucks if you want to remain anonymous.

I read somewhere that lottery officials feel that showing actual people winning the lottery, adds value to the premise that anyone has a legitimate chance to win, and that the lottery is not fixed as some people believe that it is.

I'm not, some of their lives go haywire after the fact.
Be careful what you wish for.

I'm sure she has natal promise in the chart for the winnings, definitely.

Absolutely Lonake; some of the stories are awful one of the worst I remember is the story of Jack Whittaker, the largest single Powerball winner ever.
