I am accompanying a young lady tonight to her first meeting, to see if she thinks this might work for her.Any experiences, good, bad, or otherwise? In my experience I do not like AA, seems to trade one addiction for another and does not address the root issue. Sure a less harmful addiction is always optimal, however, not addressing what is really going on. But ya got to start somewhere, I suppose. Thank you in advance!!! IP: Logged |

I don't really understand people with addictions because I guess I've never been addicted to anything ever. I can't even get my mind around how people become alcoholics when too much alcohol makes you feel sick and the smell is putrid. I wish your friend the best of luck in beating it indefinitely. Maybe a good outer planet transit to his/her son will help alot. IP: Logged |

many people swear by AA. i don't like them either. i have been to a few alanon meetings, generally the same schtick but a little less cultish...that is my main prob with the AAers, as you said, you trade one addiction for another - to the group - but it seems to work for people who don't get sucked in too far, and is a great starter for many others.IP: Logged |

I never had a problem with alcohol but I went with a friend to a meeting and stayed for 10 years . I was really lonely for people who talked about real issues (Is that a surprise lol) The talk was not really about drinking but about fears, getting along with your family/other people /just life issues. I left when it didn't fit for me anymore cuz I needed a more defined God. Then, I studied and found what I needed. In a way, it is trading one addiction for another. However, I think we all need comfy's in this harsh world. If the AA world is a comfy ,then it is OK, as far as I can see. Ami

I think they mean that AA meetings then become your addiction instead of the thing you gave up.IP: Logged |

Thank you for your replies!Belgz, the trading I speak is, like AbsintheDragonfly said, trading the addiction to the group instead of the alcohol. And, I do believe, from the times I have experienced AA in a guest situation way back in nursing school, it is based on a sort of religious tennant, realizing you are powerless to alcohol and turning over your power to "God." I feel we are not powerless to anything and that true healing comes from within, so, AA just switches it up. Having said that, AA has helped many people and many not. We shall see!!! t~~~ IP: Logged |

It's so good of you to go with her Hippi. I'm sure she's nervous, and to have a friend come with you, must help her feel better.IP: Logged |
