To use video AND audio in ones workplace??I mean, I understand the safety behind the cameras, especially in the bar business, but now the owners have placed 'bugs' all around the bar so they can hear what is being said. That creeps me out. I mean, I cannot control what people say! Isn't there some kind of expectation of privacy or something?? Sorry if this is the wrong forum, didn't know where to post. Now I'm paranoid to even go to the bathroom, seriously!!! IP: Logged |

It is illegal to record a phone conversation without someone's consent. So I would think that this is a similar situation. I don't feel this is right, morally It crosses the line............ I wouldn't want to work there, or go there at all IP: Logged |

No Wink.We don't have plants in this bathroom. ICK. They wouldn't live in that mess. Yeah, I feel very uncomfortable about it. The fact that two people are sitting at home watching and listening to everything I do and say during my shift, is ... weird. I mean, I'm not doing anything to feel guilty about, but like I said, I cannot control what people say, and in this business people like to chat, and gossip. So, like, when a customer complains about the price of something, or the way something is, I can't agree or say ANYTHING at all. I feel like a Stepford Bartender. And the thing is.. that customer doesn't know what they are being said is being heard by the owners, so then when the owners see them, and the customer gets a weird vibe, they won't know why, and confusion reigns. Or am I overthinking something that probably happens every day? OY! IP: Logged |

it sounds illegal to me but it may be a state power that allows it? homeland security and all that...i think i would just write out a bunch of cards or notes and hand them to customers with their change letting them know they are being recorded visually AND by sound and they should let the owners know they are taking their business elsewhere till that stops!! or stand outside before shift informing them as they go in and out? my town is trying to pass new regulations for the massage trade, ostensibly to give them powers to crack down on the prostitutes that use massage as a cover...though 5 years ago they brought in permits including fingerprinting and background checks which did nothing to stop the INCREASE of prostitution parlors....even though they already knew who was legit and who was not. one of the regulations is that your clothing must be "opaque" and cover you from "at least mid thigh to two inches below the collarbone". i suspect these are the very people that think our govt is getting too big and too controlling! crikey, i think i will go to the town hall meeting in a burqa and make my objections visual. Okay, must have been something else I read. But I'd be very uncomfortable in your shoes. Makes me thankful to work in the conditions I do. I'd definately read up on the laws where you're at..

Haven't read Dee's link yet, power cord is missing to my laptop (SON!!!!) but, yeah, today, I brought a mini notepad to work and whenever someone asked me something ummm... controversial, I just wrote down my answer. Weird thing is the cameras play on one of our big screen TVs and so you can SEE yourself handing the customer the note, haha, that's freaky, but, no words are said..... so if they can fire me for passing a note, I AM GOING TO COURT!!! Seriously, I have never been late, never missed ONE day, and have covered numerous, unanticipated shifts on a secs notice. I realize we are having a recession, and I AM appreciative of a job, but GEEZZZZ, this is flippin ridiculous. PLZ send me some NEW JOBS for GYPS vibes, peeps. Thanks, so much. xox. IP: Logged |

I don't know. Yesterday, it was truly creepy Wink.I was there working, and my boss calls, and in this totally ominous voice says..."I'm sitting in my living room, watching everything you are doing." I was like... yeah? so what? It's just some sort of mind feck or intimidation stragedy I guess. UGHHHH. And they wonder why they lose so much business. The customers are horrifed to know their privacy is being violated. One got up and left his whole drink, and said he would not be back. He'd been coming to that particular establishment (it's been through many owners) for 35 years! But, 3 business men came in yesterday wanting to inquire about purchasing the bar. People ask that kind of stuff all the time. Usually you can tell who is blowing smoke and who is serious. They looked serious. And they asked me if I would stay on as the manager if the deal goes through. The present owners will be foreclosed by Jan 1st if they don't come up with their back payments and taxes. So, we'll see... Sometimes things work out, just in a different way then what you thought they would. Hopefully for you too, Wink. IP: Logged |

Oh that's just CREEPY! Not right at all... I get bad feelings about this too. I'm not psychic or anything, but common sense says get the he11 out! If the place is being bought out, than maybe things will work out for you. Especially if they want to make you manager. That would be so well deserved and I'm sure you'd do a fabulous job. But if it continues and they do pay what they owe... please please find another job. If more customers knew, I'm sure they wouldn't have many left. You're too good of a person for that treatment...

That's quite disturbing Gypsee. It's illegal in my country and even if their are cameras the staff must be notified. No cams are allowed in caff area and bathrooms. That's where it ends though, no listening devices.Your employer should also know that such a thing would affect business, it is a bar after all not a prison. Please enquire about this and check whether it's legal or not. Can't be at work and feel paranoid all the time!
