when i was 13, incubus became my first favorite rock band-i would listen to 'Make Yourself' everyday-now ten years later after much more life/society issues experience and having listened to much more music, most of it a lot 'heavier', i came across this cd, and i happened to be in the mood to listen. a whole new layer was now there for me. I realized back then it had been the energy that i had liked; now i feel i really get the lyrics. Music has to be approached uniquely and personally, and when i listen to this cd like i would someone expressing their feelings for my sympathy, then the music stands out on its own-there to support the lyrics.

i feel that the message comes out through their music in a simple but genius way

thank you, incubus!

my favorite incubus song is talk show on mute...its one of their more softer songs (that i'v heard) on that album and that album is the only one i have from them...i even like it much more than megalomaniac...ok, i feel like i'm talking in circles, lol

Interesting song.

It reminded me when I was 5 and instead of waking up my hungover 'rents to make me breakfast (as they'd gotten violent when I tried that before) I scooted up a chair and used a spatula & wooden spoon to pry out the Cheerios in the cereal cabinet into my arms and made my own. A feeling of accomplishment filled me and I realized that while I couldn't depend on adults, I COULD depend on myself. I became very independent and this allowed me to think for myself without being afraid.

It also reminded me of when I defied the courts and schools by running away from home at 16, changing my appearance & assuming an alias, and hitchiking well over a thousand miles away. Instead of being broken & defeated I made my own life. And though I did make friends who helped me, I shaped my own destiny & character rather than letting others decide who & what I was going to be.

Both of these gave me a sense of confidence and psychic strength that would've been destroyed by others had I simply did what I was told. That is to say, I made myself rather than letting others make me.

So that's what I thought of when I heard the song, agreeing with the lyrics. What did you get? After all I'm sure your background and way you think is different from mine so you'll probably get something different out of it.

my brother once got me one of their cd`s and I used to listen to it,w henver I had to be cleaning up. That and for some weird reason "Try to tear me down" from the musical / soundtrack of "Hedwig and the angry Inch".

Well, I usually feel like I rather would tear my house down than get the vacuumcleaner or get through the piles of paper.

But I remember that I liked the singer`s voice. Did they sing a song called "The warmth"?
Not sure why, but I was suddenly thinking of that title.

Oh and of course "Love hurts", I guess this line: "Love hurts, but sometimes it`s a good hurt" resonates with my Venus/Pluto-theme.

You´re not into music?
Wow, I think I´ve never met anyone who said that about themselves.
Music is my life, even though I am just "consuming", but not creating it.

One thing I find so appealing about LL is meeting so many people who partly have such different perspectives in certain area.
You see, I always thought it was natural that all people were as much into music as I am (though into different kinds of music), and it is a new experience for me to learn that it is NOT a given. Interesting.

well, i like most of the other songs on the album better i think--it's the theme though, since the album was named for it-- i think maybe my fav song on there is 'out from under'

hehe well perhaps compared to the ones that are REALLY into it. there r a lot of those on the net so everytime they post playlists i feel maybe i'm not so into it LMAO dunno if that makes sense. i'm more chill with things and just be like oh yeah dats kind of a cool song or artist. i'm not gonna argue the artistic significance of any musicians any day soon. i also notice some people really listen or get the lyrics. i know it sounds durr haha but i never pay much attention to those. think i prefer cinema by a huge margin but film isn't devoid of music either. scorcesse and cameron crowe are huge music nuts..

Haha, I live both, music and cinema, add to that (musical)theatre.
I guess I am just into everything that displays or evokes emotional reactions on a big scale - larger than life so to speak.

in a way, sand, i get what you mean....i have to listen to music, but as like background music, other wise i feel like i dont have the energy to do something or the day feels longer....i dont pay much attention to lyrics although every once in a while i'll find a song that really moves me...first by the music itself, then i'll want to know what the lyrics are so i'll pay a little more attention to that....and typically, my most favorite songs are the ones that moved me first by music then by lyrics

hmm.. for me on most days it's only in the car i get to listen to music and it's pretty much up tp my driver what we listen to LMAO! what he listens to fascinates me though. it's like the number 1 station and it's like a more uncouth howard stern hehe!

i must have too much brain chatter with neptune and jupiter in 3rd coz i don't think i work while listening to music but i don't really notice deafening silence. i also can't sleep when music is on. i know some people have something playing when they're sleeping.

what's weird is that i'm a may 7 born. many classical composers were born with my same bday. also eagle eye cherry lol!

now back to incubus...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpwsuhOUAkk

and FML covers and how to videos!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6SwF1CQ85I&feature=related

i seriously counted around 7 how to videos!

if i am not moved by the music itself i will not bother to listen to the lyrics. i actually never really sit around and debate the 'significance' behind what a musician does or says or plays. i just love honest music. that you can feel is from the heart.

but this one album in particular is one that is easy for me to discuss, because of the way it expresses itself

PixieJane , it sounds like you have had a very difficult but interesting life. I would like to hear more about it, if that is something you are okay with? have you posted a bio anywhere on LL?

NickyG, I believe the title of the White Stripes song you are looking for is "Seven Nation Army".

I myself have never listened to Incubus, but I'll check out "Make Yourself" now.

The music that really got me into music was Black Sabbath. Hitherto music seemed fake, an emotionally manipulative tool deliberated to justify an assumption. Black Sabbath is just so simple, I found it easy to understand and respect. Orienting myself with music through them, I can now tolerate more superficially catering music and still penetrate the layers to understand it from an ambiguous perspective, and thus respect and appreciate it. This has more to do with music than lyrics though.

So I've listened to Incubus' "Make Yourself" now. The lyrics are pretty straight forward granted I had the pretense of reading PixieJane's post. Though the vocals are rough; not distinguished well, so I can imagine not understanding them simply due to not hearing them. Maybe it's just the youtube video I listened to, or if not I guess it's grunge. It distinctly reminds me of Papa Roach (particularly in vocals), who's major label debut released a year later, so perhaps the correlation is mainstream of the era.

Sorry for this opinionless drabble, basically what happened was I wanted to point out the White Stripes song, but I felt obligated to add something on topic.

I don't recall sharing my past in any detail save in how it might be relevent to the thread. If you wanna ask, sure, I'll likely answer. It's probably best to ask me on the Sweet Peas forum. If I see a thread with my name in the title I'll definitely look at it.

well a lot of music is the kind of thing that you have to listen to many times and then one day you're like "oh THAT's what it says!"

i just have to say right now, i wouldn't have put papa roach together there, but then again i have only heard a few of their songs. haven't much liked

well, i can't stand them now either honestly. (as in their newer stuff)--i just thought it was interesting that i saw that album so differently now. i'm not much into making making passionate arguments for or against, just conversation/discussion

i guess when i'm really really into something i don't even say anything about it, because it's a wordless kind of thing.
