Okay, so the problem is cgi scripts are not exiting. It raises the CPU and causes that resource to hang. Then the site is slow, and the weird stuff happens. We now know what that problem is. My initial gut was right. It happens when we get crawled by the major search engines. A simple fix would be just to insert code to stop them from crawling us, but we get most of our traffic from them, so that isn't a good solution. The next solution is time-intensive, but it will be started on Monday. Problem solved.IP: Logged |

I'm just glad it can be fixed. It's costing me a small fortune, but it's worth it. I was just about fed up with this problem.IP: Logged |

I'm curious as to why getting tons of traffic is ideal?IP: Logged |

Is that how the place mostly gets members?.....who seem to join, but never end up posting...I mean....is quantity more important than quality? IP: Logged |

Not sure if you mean that the crawlers *caused* it because it doesn't make sense to me. It might happen when the traffic is high but that is not necessarily what causes it if you know what I mean? In any case, I'm sorry to hear that you are paying big bugs to fix this. Hope they can guarantee their fix or at least follow up work if their solution isn't effective. Thanks a million for keeping this wonderful family up and running and safe and cool. IP: Logged |

I'd insert the code to stop crawling. Why is a high amount of traffic so important? I have some ideas, but don't see how they would apply to this particular website which is relatively ad free...IP: Logged |

I don`t understand but have no need to. Just wanted to say I get this tho crawlers=big bugs I adore you anon! ------------------ Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. ~Rumi~ IP: Logged |

Crawlers are the instigator. The problem is internal with the cgi scripts hanging. The point is to have as many people as possible to know about Lindaland to keep Linda's memory alive. To do that, we must be on the search engines.IP: Logged |

He put a temporary patch on it for the weekend, and it seems to be working, so this guy really knows what he's doing. Yeah, we do get a lot of people who sign up and never post; however, a percentage of them do post...and if not for search engines, we would get no one signing up. So, we take the lurkers with the posters and just hope that the ones reading get something meaningful out of the exchange and that all members get a taste of Linda's spirit while here. And that's what's up!IP: Logged |

Watching the numbers go up so fast, but not many new posters.....kind of makes one feel like there are crowds of people hiding in the bushes peeking in our windows... IP: Logged |

Yeah, some people do tend post a lot of interesting or helpful threads that make good reading for the place. Was thinking about that earlier. There are the thread starters, people who mostly contribute to the threads, the MIA's and the lurkers.I think i'll try out being a light contributor for awhile. IP: Logged |
