quote: By Dr. Keith AblowPublished March 28, 2012 Mega Millions, the $500 million lottery jackpot is currently at its highest level -- ever. The jackpot is up for grabs this Friday night. The fever to buy Mega Millions lottery tickets is understandable. After all, having nearly half-a-billion dollars—or even a fraction of that—would end almost anyone’s present concerns about money and change that person’s life forever. I want to tell you the absolute truth about getting rich, though. I’ve learned it over decades spent talking to people from every imaginable socioeconomic statum, at a very deep level—billionaires and the homeless, CEOs and people on public assistance, U.S. Senators and young people who haven’t ever taken the opportunity to vote. True wealth is only one thing—always, and without exception—and it has nothing to whatsoever to do with cash: It is the absolute, unshakable knowledge that you love yourself, are loved by another human being, have the capacity to love others and understand that love is immeasurable, inexplicable and evidence of a force greater than any one person or, perhaps, all that is mortal. The enormous sum of $476 million will just be fuel taking you deeper into a black hole of despair if you harbor questions about whether you’re really worth anything at all, at your core. -- And I mean worth a father’s time spent unselfishly with you as a child. I mean, worth a friend’s devoted attention. I mean, worth a husband or wife’s real devotion. I mean, worth the respect of honest critics. But, first and foremost, I mean worth investing in yourself by doing the work you truly love in this life, by surrounding yourself with people who truly care about you, by shaking off the self-defeating habits that roil your mind or body and are rooted in self-hatred or self-doubt. If you won the lottery and came to my office Saturday morning, I would tell you our work together to get you to that giant pot at the end of the rainbow—that treasure called true self-esteem—had just gotten about 476 million times tougher. Because money gained through anything other than labor, creativity, courage and commitment is far more likely than not to obscure the path toward real richness. I’m not kidding myself here. I wouldn’t turn down the jackpot. I would probably get fooled by it, too. I would assume I was a free man, now with a clear runway to fully become the person I should be. But the fact that I—a psychiatrist and a person who deeply believes the words I am writing here—would still get high on such a massive cash infusion, only shows how potent a drug it would be. Freedom never comes from money. Ever. It comes from self-expression, which requires genuine character. It is a function of whether you are willing to express yourself more, even if that could mean having less to show for it. Again, I am not someone who hates wealth. Far from it. I am happy when people make a bundle doing something true to themselves. I celebrate the work of true artists whose canvases end up netting them millions. I love the fact that taking a risk to create a business you always wanted to start might make you fabulously rich. But if you want to feel like you’ve won more than you could ever take home on Saturday, make Saturday the day you resolve—with dead-solid conviction—to follow your heart and express what you are here on earth to express. That is priceless. That is something that—were my son or daughter to trade it for half-a-billion dollars—they would find me literally in tears over what I had failed to teach them about truth and treasure.

Great article. But it's at $540 million now. Might make it to $600 by the drawing. Highest jackpot ever in the US.IP: Logged |

Various sites are reporting that it's the world's largest lottery jackpot I hope the person who wins needs it badly because there are a lot of hurting people out there. I wouldn't blame them for spending a few dollars on some tickets, no matter how small the odds are. IP: Logged |

I wouldn`t buy a ticket unless my life depended on it. ------------------ Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. ~Rumi~ IP: Logged |

Neither would I. I would not want that much money. The sheer amount of stress and attention that would come with winning such a prize very well could be the end of me. Too many expectations. ------------------ It's All Elemental ----- My Chart if relevant IP: Logged |

I would just use the money as a tool to accomplish something great that helps others. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

I really like this topic. I myself don't choose to play the lottery but even if I did and won, I know it would bring me many many problems. Many ppl who know me well know I'm a passive person and having that much money would attract certains types of ppl I don't particularly like dealing with. It wouldn't give me freedom, it would take it away. And I don't want my children growing up thinking everything gets handed to them on a silver platter lol just wanted to put my 2 cents in money brings temporary happinessIP: Logged |

Found out I won $7 in Powerball today. My state doesnt participate in the Mega Millions, so I didnt play. I would have played though and if I won helped out in all kinds of ways. Nothing wrong with having lots of money. it's what you choose to do with it that counts. But I would not want to have my name plastered everywhere as one of the winners, which I think they require. I'd rather win anonymously and save the trouble that comes along with people knowing youre loaded. IP: Logged |

In my dream world, I'd be that guy we've heard about on the news, who every Christmas dresses up like Santa and has his friends dress up as elves, gives them a bunch of big bills to hand out. And goes out handing out hundreds of thousands of dollars to people who need it.I'd LOVE to be able to do that, while staying anonymous. IP: Logged |

And if I went broke really quick, who cares? Been there before. Not scary. I'd always have the memories of the happiness brought to people, the looks on their faces and the imaginings of how they may have made their families holidays brighter. IP: Logged |

Why is that the old people who don't need it and are about to croak are the ones that seem to win?Do they just gamble more? IP: Logged |

Looks like 2 ticket holders are staying anonymous for now & the one from Maryland apparently stashed her ticket in the McDonald's restaurant where she works & hasn't shown it to anyone yet. Her lawyer hasn't even seen her ticket. It's a mess cos it looks like she bought tickets for a pool at her work & is now claiming that the winning ticket is one that she purchased on her own lmao. I see lawsuits in her future. What a mess. Here's the break down. It says that 3 tickets were sold that matched all 6 numbers. IP: Logged |

Yeah, i'm going to stash my ticket at work, where no one will ever find it - right in the burger buns - and broadcast it on national news. I'll tell people exactly where I stashed it, and stay home, on my day off, because I"m that lazy, I'll smoke some reefer. So, then they can go find it and bring it back to me. And whether they do or not we are going to have a big fight about who it belongs to anyway.God muthfckn help us. F*CK What planet are these people from?

She's an immigrant from Haiti w.7 kids. Her co-workers basically told the press that she's an attention ***** so maybe it is a story she's made up. She called a press conference, was late to it, then told them all to go away I don't know anything about Haitian girls, but that is not the American way (!) If you call a press conference then you put yourself out there to grab everyone's heart so that eventually Matt Lauer or Katie Couric or Diane Sawyer will give you some air time to get more $$$. Play the game the right way lol. Get a People magazine editorial at least. quote: I'll block my eyes to your Light when I die, if you are messing around with us like that.
