People dress up like hillbillies, rednecks, and white trash, and that's fine. Men dress up like women sometimes (knew one guy who won a costume contest doing that), and I bet some women dress like men. All of those costumes are generally considered OK. I don't think that it's really fair to say "you can dress up like culture X but not culture Y".
And if we start telling people "you can't dress like ____", then what's to keep people from going further and further with it?
Are some costumes in poor taste? Yes. Do I support banning them? Not really. Unless it's like a KKK or Hitler costume or something like that--it would have to be a lot more extreme than this for me to support banning it.
And, too, I don't see what's wrong with dressing up like another culture for a night: isn't the whole point of Halloween to be someone else for a night?
My culture is so obscure here that if someone dressed up like it, I'd be impressed. If someone actually knew the stereotypes, knew the culture enough to know that, I'd honestly probably find it funny and, again, would be impressed because nobody knows it here.
On top of that, what if you're going as a specific person and want your costume to be realistic?
And, too, we don't ban angel, devil, nun, priest, or witch costumes, or costumes of gods. So, again, why is it OK to dress up like some groups and not others?
I honestly don't mean to be insensitive, but again, not fair to say that some groups are off-limits and others are not, except as I said for extreme cases.
