It's really hard to say with any kind of certainty which sign a country is because there are different charts that one could look at to determine the sign. How does one know which one to look at?

Some countries have undergone revolutions--many have had civil wars. I've seen some astrologers just create new charts based on that, but should they? After all, we as humans don't get to change signs or charts when WE undergo changes, so why should a country get a new chart each time that it re-organizes or changes? It's not an entirely new country, just like we are not entirely new people when we change: different, yes, but not completely new. The history is still there, just like our personal history is still a part of us when we change.

But, on the other hand, one could also make the argument that, when a country as it is comes to an end, that old country "dies" and a new country is "born". Thus, in that view, it would make sense to create a new chart.

I do NOT believe in "progressed" charts, so I don't see that as an answer, though for those who do believe in that, this may be one idea that's proposed as a compromise between old chart and new chart.

Then, there's the issue of deciding what makes the birth of a country official. In some cases, like France and Italy, for example, people lived there long before it was recognized as a 'country'. To my understanding, Italy didn't officially become a country until the 19th century. However, people obviously lived in Italy for hundreds of years prior to that. But, on the other hand, maybe it's kind of like comparing conception to actual birth: that is, we don't draw up our own charts based on conception, and with good reason. Likewise, then, it would make more sense in my mind to draw up the chart of a country based on when it was officially a country. Birth officially makes you a person, so to me, a country would be "born" when it was formally unified, as that's the closest thing to birth for a country that crosses my mind in terms of events.

However, with the US as one example, this presents another problem: do you count the birth of a country as when it formally declared itself a country, and started acting like one, or when other countries recognize it as official?

To me, it does make more sense to count it as when other countries recognized it legally, but, on the other hand, who gets to decide that?

**

On that note, since we aren't going to all agree on birth charts here, and since arguments could be made for several different charts:

What sign do you feel best fits your country and why?
