Hi Every One.

I am an old timer and not familiar with forum jargon. What does trolling mean? What is a spider?

If there is anything else to know, please inform me so I can get with the lingo and not be such a fuddy duddy.

Thank you
much love and blessings

A troll will join a forum just to post random ads, usually about Viagra or soemthing and/or other random nonsense. Kind of like Spam email. Sometimes they are actual people who stick around and try to mess with the members and annoy them, but usually they are spotted for what they are right away and not taken too seriously.

A spider is a web bot that crawls (searches) a forum to take all the info and put into into search engines.

I think so anyway..

someone will be along shorty to correct me if i'm wrong, i'm sure. lol

One who leaves advertisements (these are usually automated programs that pretend to be real people) are called "spammers."

Trolls OTOH are attention seekers and people out to be jerks. At their most benign they just want attention and don't care if they upset people (which will get them the most) to get it. At their worst they take pleasure in upsetting people because they take sadistic delight in it (with the added bonus that they can't get punched in the nose over it), some of whom will even post vile messages those those freshly grieving from the suicide of a child, because it's "funny" to be so obnoxious. They'll even say they believe things they don't simply to upset people (for example, a virgin teen might go to a gay board to post that he's a father who threw out his teen gay son and hopes his son dies of AIDS, and the more upset everyone gets the happier he is). Here's a good, fun example of a troll, IMO:

And a very important thing to keep in mind is that not everyone called a troll is one. Some people have come to believe that anyone who upsets them is a troll, but that's not the case. The important distinction is that a troll WANTS to upset people.

A good distinction P.J.
Many times they start out friendly then turn sly. Even pitting member one against member.
Usually they are easy to spot but some are really slick and avoid detection for a long time.

Unfortunately, there`s no one size fits all in trolling.

I've been on another board, where they have buttons to report posts. I finally started to use the "ignore" function, with certain members, because they were acting like trolls, but I didn't know if I should report them. They would actually join in with the trolls when they got in there and tried to stir things up, but somehow maintain their membership. I'm surprised that one has lasted as long as he has, when he's posting blatantly rude posts, designed to bait - unless others take him about as seriously as I do.

I backed off from that place, because I felt like I was going to be rude to someone, and I didn't want to be. They're clueless as to what they're doing, even though they tend to offend a lot of people.

There have been people who go on there to post racist things, sexist things, really vile things. One is a former member who was angry that he was banned.

Thank you guys,

So trolls are self serving, either because they use sites like this for business purposes, or they are just bullies. Yuck, going back to hide in my little corner.

Much love and thanks

We are pretty much troll-free here. I toss them as soon as they appear.
