I was reaching into a dark place last night to check on a blown light bulb and got bit or stung on my right forefinger. I was hoping it wasn't a brown recluse or black widow. This morning, I checked and saw a paper nest, so it was a paper wasp. It only hurt for a few minutes from the jab. Then it only hurt a little if I pressed on it. After an hour, there was no pain at all. And it didn't swell. I thought all bee and wasp stings hurt bad and swell up? It only hurt like a needle jab. Could I be immune to venom? Will I turn into Wasp Man like Peter Parker turned into Spider Man when a spider bit him?

I recover from most stings the same way, which is good considering how many times I've been stung in Texas...though fire ants are a notable exception.

A friend of mine told me how a roomie of his kept making fun of him for refusing to get a tattoo. One day there was a wasp in their apartment and he went to swat it causing his tat-loving roomie to flee into a bedroom and shut the door, and then laugh at him when my friend got stung (a dying sting, he swatted it but it stung his arm as it fell past). But the next time his roomie said my friend wasn't manly enough (using an offensive word that guys like to use for that) for "being scared" of the ink needles he replied, "They can't be too bad if you're scared of a little wasp." He was never bothered about getting a tat again.

I remember getting tore up during the summer from wasps in the yard, ground nests.

Never had the misfortune to find out what Mr. Hornet is like.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornet

Hornets are the largest eusocial wasps; some species can reach up to 5.5 cm (2.2 in) in length. Hornets have stings used to kill prey and defend hives. Hornet stings are more painful to humans than typical wasp stings because hornet venom contains a large amount (5%) of acetylcholine. Individual hornets can sting multiple times; unlike typical bees, hornets and wasps do not die after stinging because their stingers are not barbed and are not pulled out of their bodies.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetylcholine

The chemical compound acetylcholine (often abbreviated ACh) is a neurotransmitter in both the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) in many organisms including humans. Acetylcholine is one of many neurotransmitters in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the only neurotransmitter used in the motor division of the somatic nervous system (sensory neurons use glutamate and various peptides at their synapses). In cardiac tissue acetylcholine neurotransmission has an inhibitory effect, which lowers heart rate. However, acetylcholine also behaves as an excitatory neurotransmitter at neuromuscular junctions in skeletal muscle.

...Hell with these guys.
