They keep popping up when I try to send an email and I enter them correctly but it says I didn't, sometimes I have to repeat it up to 20 times before it will send, and I know I am getting the code right.

It's used to prevent internet bots. The computer asks a user to complet a test, displaying letters to ensure the user is human.

Eg. AL36milK

Once the user enters the characters displayed by the user, the computer assumes it's entered by a human as computers can't solve captchas.
It's basically a security measure.

Supposedly they have software now that can do them when posting ads on Craigslist.
