I never knew this and I am so glad to know this.In Texas it is a felony of the 3rd degree. My gosh more people should know this. I have been beat up by more patients than I care to count. Alot of dementia, overdoses, etc. but there have been some that were just being jerks. Yea, we dont get payed enough for this job and it always is our fault, per the institution we work for cause they want to gain the income and please the customer. rant over~ IP: Logged |

Healthcare workers can attack, too. One story that haunted me was an article I caught in a Houston paper when I was a kid about how a paramedic gave up on CPR but a distraught family member threw himself or herself on the person and continued CPR and saved the person's life. The paramedic's response was to beat the crap out of the person who succeeded where he failed. And then there's what goes on in Texas psychiatric wards and certain nursing homes, too... IP: Logged |

I'm fortunate, I work with a lot of dementia patients, and have never been hit. It's against the law here too, and luckily for me my employer would'nt condone it.IP: Logged |

Pixie I hear ya! The other night my kid got broadsided and her dog was thrown out the window. The dog is big and was scared and I had to get her to the otherside of a busy street. I asked a paramedic for help and he cincnhed up the dog's collar, said "some on mut" and began to drag her. I slapped his hand away and picked her up myself. Freak of a "healthcare worker." Ofcourse anybody can assult anybody, that is not what I am saying, but as an ICU RN I get put in some pretty tough situations, as already stated allthewhile having to duck blows, remain professional (which after taking so much we often tell them like it really is), because our institutions will not have our backs when push comes to shove. It's all about the money to the big guys....someday some "institution" is going to get into big trouble for putting some healthcare worker in harms way. We do our jobs cause we want to help,we like what we do and not everybody can do it... the ones you speak of are few and far between. Of course abuse, neglect occurs in nursing homes, we get neglected folks from home too. That is not my issue. cathy like I said alot of the physical ones are the ones with dementia, they cant help it, but we should atleast have more support. And my point of this post is to let folks know, the somewhat sane ones anyway just cause their in the hospital doesnt get you off scott free, all of the time. IP: Logged | |
