My Great-Grandmother was (in addition to being a nurse) an old mountain herbalist. My Mom has a faint memory of her putting these up in the house we're currently living in after it was built by my Grandfather: We figure it's some sort of protection or blessing, but do any of you know (or guess) any more? It looks like cattails and then the second plant's difficult to make out - it kind of looks like Queen Anne's Lace, but has a much thicker, woodier base.

It looks like common tansy. A medicinal herb used for worming, abortion, gout ect.. A lovely but invasive plant with a pleasant scent. I have a nice patch of it but it IS toxic and must be used carefully It was indeed, in ancient times, used to ward off evil. discription: http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/t/tansy-05.html pics http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/tansy.html ------------------ We need to listen to our own song, and share it with others, but not force it on them. Thanks, juni! Your first link won't open for me on my phone, but your description makes sense for something put into a new construction. Do you know what the cattails might've been for? Edited to add: From the bit of research I've done, perhaps prosperity and/or abundance. ------------------ If I've included this sig, it's because I'm posting from a mobile device. Please excuse all outrageous typos and confusing auto-corrects. IP: Logged |
