I've enjoyed so many it's hard to choose, but I loved Amy Tan's, Elizabeth Gilbert's, and Eustace Conway's (The Last American Man.)

Ive lost all respect for TED since they censored Graham Hancock's and Rupert Sheldrake’s Tedx talks...Despicable. Apparently... their Ideas are not worth spreading

Yea me too, pity about their board of jerks. http://blog.ted.com/2013/03/18/graham-hancock-and-rupert-sheldrake-a-fresh-take/ quote: My ultimate favourite was Jill Bolte Taylor "My Stroke of Insight", which is how I found out about TED talks.
That was the first TED talk I saw also. So its ok to talk about altered states of consciousness caused by a stroke that gave a person incredible insights while researching schizophrenia, but not if you have ever taken Ayahuasca or Mushrooms, such insights are to be censored. Oh man, I wish Terrance Mckenna was alive to see this debacle. ------------------ You can't handle my level of Tinfoil! ~ {;,;}

Graham Hancock and Rupert Sheldrake, a fresh take http://blog.ted.com/2013/03/18/graham-hancock-and-rupert-sheldrake-a-fresh-take/ The article explains why certain decisions were made and how no one was actually censored. I understand their need to keep the talks from going too far out. They did not bash these guys. quote: Both Sheldrake and Hancock are compelling speakers, and some of the questions they raise are absolutely worth raising. For example, most thoughtful scientists and philosophers of science will agree it’s true that science has not moved very far yet in solving the riddle of consciousness. But the specific answers to that riddle proposed by Sheldrake and Hancock are so radical and far-removed from mainstream scientific thinking that we think it’s right for us to give these talks a clear health warning and to ask further questions of the speakers. TED and TEDx are brands that are trusted in schools and in homes. We don’t want to hear from a parent whose kid went off to South America to drink ayahuasca because TED said it was OK. But we do think a calmer, reasoned conversation around these talks would be interesting, if only to help us define how far you can push an idea before it is no longer “worth spreading.”

My ex was one of a lucky few to be invited into a private chat with him when he was still alive ( after a radio show I want to say...i can't remember how he got that opportunity now ). I want to say it must have been 15 years or so ago now (maybe more).... He was very much a fan of him, way before I'd even heard his name. I wasnt impressed at the time, but later on learned how brilliant he was and what a huge following he has..... Even if ex still has the chat, I doubt he'd share it. IP: Logged |

First off, you should watch Hancock's video from TED, and then re-read the below quote and see if their reasoning makes any sense to you in relation to the content of what Graham actually says in the discussion.Graham Hancock - The War on Consciousness (Censored Ted Talk) 18mins http://youtu.be/d0UFU2gp7oQ quote: We think it’s right for us to give these talks a clear health warning and to ask further questions of the speakers. TED and TEDx are brands that are trusted in schools and in homes.
From my point of view, TED are basically saying is.... We don't trust YOU with this information. We don't trust parents of kids, or schools where kids may see the video to have a mature discussion about such issues. If anything their censorship reaction points clearly to the gaping hole in our society that Handcock and others are trying to bridge! TED mocks my intelligence by censoring what "they" feel I, or my children can't handle! TED using that defense would be like Randall saying... "I need to edit all of Lei_Kuei's posts where he mentions Cthulhu, because I don't feel kids could handle reading Lovecraft, and Linda Goodman had a very optimistic view of the universe... unlike Lovecraft. - So I don't want kids or YOU complaining to me that after reading Lovecraft you went mad... In doing what they have done, TED demonstrates that it is only devoted to spreading ideas they feel I can handle safely after they remove all the sharp corners so that its all left cuddly like a Teddy bear... Yes, that is the message I want my kids to learn... -face palm- And people wonder why this world is a mess? --- Now you can argue that its not censored (It was deleted from the main site and their Youtube channel) because, Yes you can still see the video on the TED website framed in the blog-post that contains these statements about the video. Which by doing so, they are pre-loading you with what "they feel" the video contains! That is a form of thought censorship! quote: The TED blog that frames Graham Hancock’s talk puts forward these complaints about his talk as reasons for the video being pulled: “He misrepresents what scientists actually think. He suggests, for example, that no scientists are working on the problem of consciousness.” “Hancock makes statements about psychotropic drugs that seem both nonscientific and reckless.” “He states as fact that psychotropic drug use is essential for an “emergence into consciousness” “[He states] that one can use psychotropic plants to connect directly with an ancient mother culture.” “He seems to offer a one-note explanation for how culture arises (drugs), it’s no surprise his work has often been characterised as pseudo-archaeology.” These are amazing statements from the TED staff, because I can find absolutely no evidence in Graham’s talk for any of these accusations. Go ahead and watch the talk over, looking for these supposed statements or claims in it. So misleading are they, that I can only assume they haven’t even watched the talk and are simply repeating accusations from some of the emails sent to them by the obnoxious, whining bloggers involved. Let me be clear by saying it again: the accusations against Graham Hancock which have been given for the pulling of his talk are completely without basis. http://consciouslifenews.com/ted-hancock-sheldrake-controversy-analysis/1151966/
In a weird way I'm also pre-loading you with a thought form of what has happened on TED. The difference is, I trust you to do your own research, and make up your own mind... http://blog.ted.com/2013/03/14/open-for-discussion-graham-hancock-and-rupert-sheldrake/ ------------------ You can't handle my level of Tinfoil! ~ {;,;} IP: Logged |

I advocate much of the research of Timothy Leary or Masters and Johnson; but do not feel their work are TED Talks material. Just like many new age topics or even Crowley or Lovecraft; some things simply are not automatically TED Talks material. Like here at LL; some topics are not allowed. Does that mean they are unworthy or bad topics? Not always. Mostly it is that LL is not the correct venue to air them. Same for TED Talks. If they allow everything the show would become a mess without any discretion. They must also protect themselves from legal issues, hence some topics are a problem. Not because they are wrong or bad; but because it never fails; some idiot(s) will try what they saw get hurt; especially minors; and justify it by saying: "TED Talks endorses this so it must be A-OK to do!"
I still love TED Talks. Anyhow........ A few more comments and then I am I am done with my comments on why something was censored or not. There are actually warning labels on some heated hair styling tools that say; "For external use only" Some plastic bags have warnings to idiots; "Do not place child in bag; may cause suffocation" Other warnings to idiots: "Do not immerse in water" listed on various electrical tools. People can be amazingly stupid; and shows like TED Talks must protect themselves from possible legal action. The so called banned material is still on the net; just like porn sites are still out there if you want to look. IP: Logged |

Lexx have you watched the video?This is the problem I have: quote:
Just like many new age topics or even Crowley or Lovecraft; some things simply are not automatically TED Talks material.
Going back to what I originally said about Jill Bolte Taylor "My Stroke of Insight". Look at her video and compare it to what Graham is saying. Virtually identical in relation to how altered states of consciousness and the research involved with such is incredibly useful to humanity and to people individually. Graham is not advocating taking hallucinogens in his video, if anything I'm personally more put off than ever in regards to taking them. I don't like vomiting or diarrhea. Or a 4 hour trip to hell for that matter lol The Exploration of consciousness via Jill Taylor as one of the most viewed/popular TED talks, and Grahams consciousness video being the most controversial... what does that tell you! From Ted's own website: http://www.ted.com/pages/about quote: Our mission: Spreading ideas.We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we're building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other. This site, launched April 2007, is an ever-evolving work in progress, and you're an important part of it. Have an idea? We want to hear from you.
Look at what they say here, even look at the language used: "A community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other." Well they have just shat all over their own mission statement in my opinion! Im just absolutely fraking livid right now over TED's double standards. ------------------ You can't handle my level of Tinfoil! ~ {;,;} IP: Logged |

Not going to further hijack Faith's tribute to TED Talks thread to argue with you. I have clearly made my points.This thread is about "Your favorite TED Talk" NOT a "What do you hate about TED Talks?" thread. Feel free to start a TED Talks hate thread if you wish. "Spider Line" or "Universal Codes" might be good forums for it. You could post links to their videos, post full text articles on Graham Hancock’s talk and so forth. Basically YOU SPREAD THE WORD; since TED Talks will not do as you wish. Post all you want about the topics you are upset with TT about.

Huh? quote: This thread is about "Your favorite TED Talk" NOT a "What do you hate about TED Talks?" thread"
I didn't say anywhere that I hate TED talks On the contrary I love many of them. What I have been saying is I'm annoyed at certain attitudes held by the scientific governing body behind the TED talks... --- And a comment as regards the so called legal issues with TED trying to cover their behinds. Such is a fallacy since if they really felt they were going receive legal action over that video, then why didn't they pull it from the website wholesale? Its still reachable via TED as they link to the Vimeo version of their channel. TED as far as I am aware do not endorse ANY of their videos. The bottom line is they crapped their pants, pulled the video and due to the social media uproar had to re-post it in an almost un-findable section of the site unless you knew what you were looking for... And slapped slanderous commentary about the videos content on that same page.. Truly a paragon of higher learner those folks have shown themselves to be. I have little else to say on the matter. I do however appreciate the 1000's of TED speakers and people involved in organizing the events. ------------------ You can't handle my level of Tinfoil! ~ {;,;} IP: Logged |
