okay i'll get away from this section of the forum for a bit now.....

Years ago, when someone posted a link to the IP checker, I checked the IP's of me and a few people in NE Ohio (those I could see at the top of email), and it showed us as all coming from the same spot, because we had the same internet provider. We're hours away from each other, so why wouldn't it reflect that?

It can be far away at times and close at times. It is a weird thing but it can be super close, too.

What Teasel said. Not all IP locations are accurate and there are software programs to hide IP's.

What you could do is, ban people via MAC Address.

This means if they try to manipulate their IP Address, they still won't be able to get on to the site, due to the MAC Address Ban.

(The MAC Address is the physical address of your computer; every computer has one.)

Obviously they can just go on another computer, but then again; not many people have more than 1 or 2 computers, right?

I never heard about this. I have one person I have banned in the history of my website. He tries again and again to get on from several different computers in his city but I am on the case and ban him as soon as I see him

I don't have as many people as Randall does though, so there is a big difference there. Randall could not go through all the IPs and do this.

Oh really? I would of thought more people would know about this.

That's brilliant you're on the case Ami Anne, teach him a lesson :P

It was just a suggestion, but can you actually see more information than just the user's IP?

Thanks Sven
I am a Libra ASC. I am very sweet natured and don't like conflict but you have to deal with it if you are doing anything in life, other than sitting on your butt.

You can see the place of the IP. This person has a unique place so it makes it easy. If the IP was New York city, you could not get rid of the person because there are millions of people at that IP.

For this person, I can see the place and know it is him. If not, I don't care because it is worth it to get rid of him

You're welcome
That's exactly true, people are always out there to cause conflict to others; so you are using your Libran traits positively. I'm a Scorpio rising

Oh right, the location of the User, that's sneaky!

I dont think showing IP will help.

Ive seen many people (me included) whos IP changes constantly becuse of some trick providers use.

So practically i exist in the entire country XD

I think many users have that so banning wont help.

Maybe trying to aim on a different part for identification is better.

I also don't think making IP's visible would help.
Everyone has very valid points on both sides, but my vote's a no.

I share this computer with someone who has VERY opposite 'tastes and interests' than I do! (Bet that will super-confuse some ppl!!)

I would vote no based on 'sharing' a computer...

Seems to me I remember a thread where one can make their IP anywhere they choose to reroute it to.

Yes, it's quite simple. You can use http://www.hidemyass.com/

or a similar site. I"ve a feeling many posters here do that by the looks of things.

There are youtube videos on how to make the switch. Not something you'd want do permanently, but I used it when Randall quietly banned me a few times, when I wasnt done talking, then went back to my regular ip. You can post under the same name you use. Comes in handy in situations like that. Though I imagine some people use it to come up with multiple usernames and play games.

youtube can teach you how. I can never remember how to off the top of my head, though it's not very complicated. I've not memoriezed the steps yet.
