YTA, Wow! Now I know why you want to be at home all the time... Oh my lord, the air in your beautiful home is filled by children who have talent and inspiration in fine music.

I think you mentioned in another forum... that Mitchell received and accepted an invitation to study at a music conservatory? yay!!

His original composition reminds me of music tracks they use for movies shown on the Hallmark channels!

What an opportunity he has opening up before him... World-class teachers can hone his technique, and ply him to 'break open' his alabaster-box filled with the mystery and beauty of music!

Tell Mitchell that he needs a short-coat with long tails, and needs to swap out the 'lamps' for his own 'candelabras'...

Play on! I look forward to hearing more!!

Thank you, ladies !!

Mirage29,

Juilliard has already said "No" lol But that's Juilliard. Unless he's supposed to be the next David Garrett or Joshua Bell, better choose something more conventional Because to go to Juilliard, you must learn either violin or piano and nothing else, and practice eight hours a day and do nothing else. After that, unless you are good enough to be hired by an orchestra, you'll be making coffee at Starbucks

But Mitchell has several options open to him. One of the programs of interest is a joint degree program at Harvard and the New England Conservatory or the Berklee College of Music. The other is another joint degree program at Columbia and the Manhattan School of Music. Yet another is the Royal Academy of Music (where my cousin is a professor) and University College London, but his mother doesn't want to send him abroad.

The problem I'm facing is that most music programs at colleges are entirely academic and not music performance. For example, a lot of colleges teach you all there is to know about Mozart without teaching you in the least bit how to play a Mozart Sonata.

YTA, good job rearing your kids. Kudos to you and your wife! You have such wonderful kids.

I loved the way he played Fantasie in particular (or maybe I'm just biased because Fantasie is one of my top favorite classical pieces hahaha)

Does he plan on pursuing music professionally?

The trouble with music professionally is that you are stuck with a dichotomy. Either you quickly become a Justin Bieber/Michael Buble or you get stuck waiting tables at some restaurant while waiting for the ship that never sails in. While I'm not pushing him for the top, I want him to have a secure/comfortable life. Being a pre-med major, engineering/business something or another in college helps get him the paycheck he needs to live. Being a starving musician has no glory.

Thank you very much. The credit goes entirely to my wife. My 8 year old also plays the piano and the violin well.

Having said that, the private music lessons and orchestra fees cost me US$1,300 a month! And the two grand pianos (one is a Steinway), plus the four violins (one is a 100 year old Italian violin), forget about it!

I see where you're coming from and you're right. I never realized being in the music industry could be that hard, especially with classical music.

Well, you should take part of the credit too because you're such a supportive father to your kids. I wish someday I could be like you (emphasis on someday after I accomplish my goals haha)

I'm drafting vicariously off all this glorious chance.... The "place" you learn how to feed the muse of the song is through the "atmosphere" of 'context'.... Know Mozart, and all about him and the history, then he will 'know' (like biblical, MERGE) with the music. And THAT's what the schooling will provide. Widen and add the texture of 'context'.... He will have to want this BADLY with passion, for his OWN self, in order to 'break' into the WorldClass level of musicianship.

If "that" is "in" him.... then there will be NOTHING to hold him back! Not a mom. Not a grieving dad. It will BE for "him" and his 'wife' which is/would be the Devotion and Calling and His Answering... to the inner daemon, the muse tugging in his soul.

YTA.... I feel for you as a caring and careful parent..... {{{hugs}}}} But don't worry!

ADD: (7/25 I learned a little more about situation and some handicaps.... WOW, Now I'm appreciating what this all means here with even higher admiration. What incredible work and dedication!)

I wish you ALL much gentle tender caring-- LOVE, to you and all your household!!

Let the Power of Dreams be the engine that propels us toward light and understanding of our journeys... Here's to Mitchell's future... May he find friends, fulfillment, and much happiness on the road before him.
