I have heard about this on and off for years but recently the media has played it up. quote:

OH lord!!!! i hope not!! that is beyond dangerous, just this time last year a 17 year old kid in Australia died when some people came out of the blue while hanging with his friend and knocked him.he fell on the pavement hitting his head, didn't make much of it, went back home, last posted on his FB about feeling so depressed from a sudden headache, and then died, as he got a concussion from that, stupid thing random strangers did to him.

However, as the media seems to be obsessing with this I expect it to become more common because whatever the media obsesses with becomes what everyone else obsesses with, including in doing stupid crap like this. Yes, the more the media plays it up, the more the perpetrators will indulge and it becomes a vicious circle.
