recently, I've decided to see a therapist regarding my anxiety problems...

It's all been getting too much and I seem to overthink everything and I don't want to live a life where I overthink.

My question is really, do you think it can work?

You should combine it with medication; severe anxiety is very real and very problematic and I dont think just therapy alone is enough but I think is a huge mistake to just treat anxiety with medication as well.

I think the right medication; ideally one that is not addictive but helps with the labile mood and relaxes you in combo with a good therapist who is supportive and will listen and allow you to vent but also teach you new habits and coping skills will be ideal...

YOU WILL have to put in the work though, therapist are not magicians, but you need the support of a therapist I think to make those big changes and make this easier but its not like magic going to see a therapist and it takes time and commitment; you must comply with appointments and you have to be serious about wanting to learn to relax and let go and make some serious changes in your life...


I would also add flower essences to the mix...

Mind-therapy
Body-medication
Soul (energy field)-flower essences

I think a holistic approach is the best.......

Therapists vary wildly in their abilities. If you can, ask people you trust who seemed to have benefited from a therapist (note, actually have, not just say they have) to recommend one.

Some really suck. Others are worth their wait in gold. I get the impression that the bad ones are more common than the good though I've been told that's because a great many get into psychology to deal with their own personal issues, fail to, and thus try to work them out through their clients/patients, and an increasingly common practice is to MAKE would-be therapists go through mandatory therapy themselves (even if they say they don't need it) before giving them a license to treat others. I don't know how effective this will prove to be, but even so a great many got into practice before such a requirement was made and are still a risk to those who come to them.

I personally found a support group to be effective. I don't know if they have one for people with anxiety, but I'd think they would. Note, this should be a support group for a specific condition, not a general mental health one.

I'd be wary of medication. They've done good, but they've also caused harm as well (especially when going on or coming off of them as the brain chemistry changes). In addition I'm convinced some doctors are just mercenaries who get kickbacks for prescribing specific ones...I've known one psychiatrist who was busted for taking bounties and it's just plain human nature. Therapists have the same human nature as the rest of us and it's not always pretty. OTOH, if you can find good recommendations from people you know have been helped then it should be less of a concern. In any case, a good sign of responsible prescription giving is asking frequent questions about medication (and preferably with blood tests to rule out all sorts of physical problems that can create mental conditions such as a malfunctioning thyroid or blood sugar problems) rather than just giving you a pill to pop after a single session and not asking much about it as if it's guaranteed to work as advertised.

Much appreciated. This is something I wish to conquer.

I'm actually concerned about medication - I don't think it is at a stage where i might need medication?

I have been trying for years to sort this myself but I think a therapist would really help me and I really appreciate your replies
