Cool article, it actually ties in with a bunch of stuff of I have read/watched videos about in relation to various cataclysms that have drastically changed this planet in ways one could scarcely believe. I like the Buffy/Lovecraft connection you are making there… And recently I have been watching “The Walking Dead” on DVD where in essence it is almost like the survivors have tumbled into a “hell dimension” of sorts.
Anyways, one thing that pis.ses me off about the series is how after Season 1 much of the shock-value from the “Zombie motif” is completely gone (if it wasn’t already gone given all of the movies/games about such). For the most part I find the zombie angle nothing but shoddy window dressing for the interactions/dynamics of the human characters … with other human characters in a battle to survive.
I mentioned this to my brother who agreed that the only way to evolve the horror aspects of a series such as TWD is to replace the zombies with Lovecraftian-Helldimensional Mist Monsters… There would ALWAYS be more shock value available by being able to add in plenty of unknowable wtf Monsters to deal with during a world ending Apocalypse by going down this route…
And you could still have ALL of the good aspects of TWD in play just the same… as “The Mist” showed exactly how such could work when people are thrown into that type of a scenario.
The Endless Mist… ?
