Something I've noticed and have observed for years, across a number of Internet forums:

Every forum has just a few of the type of member I'm about to describe. I'll call them "forum gurus", okay?

Forum gurus exhibit these characteristics:
1. They've been on the forum for a really long time, but rarely post.
2. They're loved and admired by the rest of the forum members, almost unanimously.
3. When they do post, their posts are kept short and are overwhelmingly positive and sympathetic. They rarely lodge a complaint against anyone or anything, and when they do so, they use the mildest language possible.
3. When they do post, there's a good chance that what they post will be a famous quotation.
4. They never miss an opportunity to post to Happy Birthday and Get Well threads.
5. They never get sucked into flame wars, though occasionally they'll make a single post to an ongoing heated debate. Interestingly, that post will never be near the beginning of the thread. Generally, at least 5 pages of hate need to be generated before they bestow their borrowed wisdom upon the unfortunate combatants.
6. They reveal very little about themselves, so no one actually knows them except for that one forum member that knows them AFK -- and that person is as tight-lipped as a dead Scorpio with rigor mortis. (Blackmailed, possibly??)

So:

Are they really as wise as their appearance and reputation suggest? Or is the only wisdom they have the borrowed wisdom of the Quotations Page?

Despite the sympathy they exude in their responses to the sick and troubled, do they really have any emotional investment in what goes on? Or are they just sociopaths with good public relations skills?

After all, if a person didn't really care, it would be damned easy for him or her to always pause and cool off before replying to anything he had an emotional reaction to. And that delay in response would give him time to think about what response would ingratiate himself with the largest number of forum members and alienate the fewest.

What do you think? How often do we get played by manipulative, lurking actors and actresses on the Internet?

Well, this post basically pokes at anyone who has shown some kindness - wishing someone happy birthday, wishing them well, listening to people when they're hurting, those who have the sense to stay away from the fighting.

I am not asking this to be combative: why do you feel the need to see so much that's bad in everyone? Why do you feel the need to tell just about everyone here that they're wrong, what they should post, who they should be? Note: there is a difference between disagreements in certain threads, and having it happen in every thread. People argue in some, and get along just fine in others.

teasel, those are excellent questions you just asked me! I love incisive questions, they show true intelligence in the one asking them. I'm going to answer those questions, too. The answer is just really long to put into layman's terms so that anyone can understand it, so give me a little bit, okay? I'm workin' on it.

I'll tell you this much: I'm not as mean as I appear to be. You'll see.

I wasn't poking fun at anybody, either. Honest Injun. The question I asked above is absolutely sincere, and doesn't mean anything more or less than the dictionary definitions of the words it's made of.

You're asking if these people are sociopaths. Doesn't that strike you as a mean thing to say?

And did you ever consider that those same people would back off, or consider their responses before posting, so as not to hurt feelings - including your own?

There are a lot of sociopathological tendencies int he average person, teasel. And plenty of full-blown sociopaths, to boot. What makes you think there aren't any here? Amongst several hundred thousand registered users, lol? Get me a bookie; what are the odds that no one here is an all-out bad egg? Hang onto your emotions and get real, little sister. This world's an ugly place, and it does ugly things to people.

Here's the answer to your questions, btw: http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum25/HTML/005105.html

I like you, please come find me. There are better forums than this. I built one, by the way. And I'm not like Randall; I won't let hatred and cruelty run amok there. Good people will be safe. It isn't like the Jerry Springer Show, like this place is.

Gee, never saw *that* reaction coming. *yawn*

teasel, I come here for good things, to do good things, and in return i get my feelings stomped all over by people like Faith and Leeloo. WHILE I'm straining myself to the limit to be patient and appeal to their best selves. and they'll have none of it, they insulted and insylted and insulted, and laughed and high-fived each other. Yes, they eventually ran my patience out; only after that did i fire back. go read it! it's all there to see.

i get my feelings stomped all over by people like Faith and Leeloo -- That in itself I can handle. What I can't handle is that that was okay with everybody. Just business as usual, nothing to see here. How can this be a good place? THINK.

I have the same question as teasel.

I once knew a person like this one, he liked to make war than peace. The main thing is to break the laws, to see the bad where it has nothing, let you down.

I see that this kind of person only want attention...

Oh condemned by a Moderator. Someone who got her ego stroked by being handed a badge by the webmaster. Now you're definitely not going to see this place for what it is, are you?

If you're a decent person, DaniPepper, answer to the situation I just brought up. I want to hear how you rationalize it into being okay.

See, this is one of those uncomfortable questions I was talking about. No one here will admit when something is wrong! How can I respect that?

I don't need to answer, because my ego is nice where it is. Wow, you noticed that I'm a moderator!!! But I think, before any comment, judgement or badge, you need to respect people. o, I'm not talking about me, I'm talking about you....

LL is a place where you can learn things, and I saw what you are trying to do here. I know, that you terrible wants to push people down, only for elevate your own ego. You just think you are smarter and better than anyone here, making these kind of comments, but let me tell you one thing: everyone has their time to learn the bad and good in life. Life is action/reaction. If you do a good thing, you'll receive a good thing in return. do you know to where I want to reach?

But please, don't take me as a know-all person. If you see this world as a bad one, it is your opinion. If I see this world as a place where we can learn things, it is my opinion. The thing here is that you offend people for free. You don't see that is that's ok with people, let them like this. No one can save a person who doesn't want to be saved. I see that you want to open the eyes of people with a knife, stead of dialoging. As I said, people have their own time to "wake up".
