I was pleasantly surprised that
Netflix aired an older movie
I had never seen way back in 1974
when I was 19 years old😎
It did not hit the local movie
theatres and so never got to see it👽
It was
The Taxi Driver
Starting Robert Denero
and several other well known stars😎
Robert Denero looks so young that it
is quite shocking to me👽😳
I did not realize how handsome
he was in his youth😳😎

A movie that shaped me was The Little Girl Who Lived Down the Lane. Jodie Foster played the kid in it right after she played her role in Taxi Driver.

(Surprised Randall hadn't heard of Taxi Driver, not only because it was huge, but because it was partially blamed for the shooting of Ronald Reagan, by one of the few men to get off on an insanity plea...not that this movie wanted that to happen, and the guy who made it thought of giving up movie making--Reagan himself was a known actor in Hollywood before politics--because he felt terrible that his movie may have contributed to the assassination attempt.)

I was 16 when I saw TLGWLDTL (from the 70s) on a TV station. I'd been a runaway (hardcore street life for about 6 months, not that I was a stereotypical prostitute on drugs that everyone thinks of female runaways as, even if a few did try to force me into that so that I could appreciate Taxi Driver more than I probably would've otherwise when I saw that one later), was in a special program at school designed to break my spirit, and my mother was passed out drunk...and that I was inside watching TV because it was raining outside as it did in much of the movie no doubt helped.

I was so spellbound by the character and her life (if this wasn't lengthy enough as it is, I'd say why) that I watched the end credits for the first time in my life, found there was a book, and within a week I checked out the book from the local library (same open ending, however). I even got into Emily Dickinson for awhile (and think one of the poems saved my life), and loved the Romantic Era classical music so that I still have some music of Liszt and Chopin (among others).

In the early 2000s, I found fan pages devoted to it, and I came very close to writing a fanfic (would've been my first) to give it a more proper ending. Long story short, the family of two people killed would need proof of deaths to inherit the fortune (and not really care about justice) so they hire one of the best private investigators, and it becomes a battle of wits (and later conscience) between him and the 2 kids (one a genius with incredible cunning, the other a magician, the two together seeming unstoppable). But life was still hard for me then, I had a computer from the early 90s to work with, and I couldn't decide if I wanted to do it from the 70s (when laws and investigation techniques differed greatly from the current day at the time, and I could be a perfectionist about details like that) or modern day. I really regret that I never did it back then.

For a sordid (if enthralling) tale, one that made it difficult for me to watch Martin Sheen (who played a cruel pervert in the movie) in other movies for awhile as his character left an impression on me, it somehow came off as strangely innocent despite how turbulent the 70s were...I realize now it's because it was so focused on a few characters in a very small town. This movie is just one of many examples of how diversity existed in movies back then, too, though the only one I can think of offhand where a young (blonde) girl (at least implied to be Jewish) falls for a boy (Italian) who suffered the effects of polio, though he was not helpless. He was brilliant, and stronger than the polio that affected him.

Lots of classic Halloween movies come from the 70s. Might see some this month!

x

I could mention some movies that people find hard today as there was more story than CGI (and more than made up for any bad effects), some I was surprised to have liked, where the hero was often not larger than life, which was refreshing. Nowadays they have to be larger than life, even Chosen Ones. While that certainly existed back then, plenty of characters in movies still considered classic, from drama to crime to comedy, were ordinary people that rose above the odds, sometimes even after the supposed Chosen One failed and died.

Even in fantastic movies this could be the case, like Dragonslayer (by the way, the guy who plays Palpatine played a character there, and so much younger at the time), and that movie had some utterly beautiful scenery. E.T. and Gremlins also come to mind...and I'd include Night of the Comet, among many others. Even Alien.

(Though I do love movies like Star Wars, Excalibur, Terminator, etc. Nothing against the Chosen One trope, just nice, and more inspiring, to see more relatable people rising to the occasion because they tried rather than because they're gifted with special powers or destiny.)

x

Oh! Speaking of Star Wars, someone did a "modern version" of the fight between Kenobi and Darth Vader from the 70s movie. Don't know how this would come off to those who remember seeing Star Wars when it first came out, but I know one who liked it (but believes it would've been rated-R even with just this, and thus affected the history of scifi/fantasy in movies, including Star Trek, so glad it didn't happen, but still enjoyed this, even found it emotionally moving as they replayed an audio from Revenge of the Sith). Just there for anyone curious (I start it later in the vid, and it does include the other things going on which can be sped through or skipped over easily if desired):
http://youtu.be/to2SMng4u1k?t=98

x

The animated movie Wizards gets a special note as it was so controversial at the time. It was corny, but had clever moments...and the cartoonist who made it is amazed at how many were having palpitations at the violence, vulgarity, and lewdness of it when far more extreme stuff now airs on Prime Time!

x

Though just born, this movie (based on an older book) came out, though I didn't see it until I was an adult. A surprising number of children, including boys (though there's little violence and gets to be like a Harlequin romance novel at times, some beautiful songs there, but not so much without the context and thus won't link them), liked it when I let them see it in the 2000s. Has some classic actors in it, and Christopher Lee is spellbinding in his performance, like this scene:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuCWXGFteTw

I got a copy for my grandmother, and it became a favorite of hers, reminding her of better times, and hope that she'd find a joy she had sort of lost herself. Me and my cousin did this song at her wake:

I remember the first movie that Pixie Jane mentioned. I’ve never seen Taxi Driver.

I’m going to have to look for a list, to see if anything sparks a memory. All The President’s Men, is one.

I remember The Conversation.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0071360/?ref_=tt_sims_tt_t_7

Audrey Rose, and Carrie. The endings. Mum didn’t expect the last bit of Carrie - the jump scare- and us girls were clinging to her side, as we walked up the stairs.

The original Halloween.

I've seen almost all the movies mentioned here by others, though I hadn't heard of Audrey Rose before and I'm curious to maybe catch this one later.

Jodi Foster seems real popular, and another one that often people forget about is her starring in 'Freaky Friday' from the 70s which I had on VHS, and watched countless times when younger... (along with developing a major crush on both Annabelle and Ellen).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freaky_Friday_(1976_film)

I also used to love watching 'The Exorcist', I think more as an act of rebellion since I was brought up Catholic, and felt like I was watching something forbidden every time I sneaked a viewing from a recorded TV version I had on a unmarked VHS lel... I was about 12-14ish at the time... which is about the same age as the Regan character, yea I crushed on her too but still consider the 'crucifix' scene nightmare fuel. And I also thought the movie was real in terms of its themes... ahh the joys of a catholic household... so I was often worried I too would end up possessed (or maybe I wanted to be, cant actually remember).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Exorcist

A few other notable mentions that I enjoy from the 70's were movies I either saw as an adult or in my late teens such as... (in no particular order).

Deer Hunter
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Deer_Hunter

Apocalypse Now
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalypse_Now

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Texas_Chain_Saw_Massacre

The Last House on the Left
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_House_on_the_Left

A Clockwork Orange
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Clockwork_Orange_(film)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Flew_Over_the_Cuckoo%27s_Nest_(film)

And more recently I saw Rosemary's Baby which was excellent, but I don't think I'd have cared much for it when younger as it's abit too cerebral.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosemary%27s_Baby_(film)

Pretty strange considering what the director ending up getting involved in after this, life intimating art I guess...

Another obscure one which I doubt anyone has seen... though maybe PJ has, since I know how much she enjoys scifi flicks and space operas.. and that's 'Dark Star' which was written by Dan O'Bannon who would later write the screenplay for 'ALIEN'... and DS is like a like comedic and philosophical version of both Alien and 2001 a Space Odyssey... the end alone makes it all worth while imo, if you can slice through all of the cheese that is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Star_(film)

And ofc...

2001: A Space Odyssey (film)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001:_A_Space_Odyssey_(film)

Gonna stop here because there are probably tons more I could add, but I figure the above would be the most well known and worth a look.

My Dad use to watch Ben-Hur
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben-Hur_(1959_film) every Christmas,
the first time I recall watching it was when I was 7.

Now it's a much easier movie to watch because it's been digital restored and you can see what a production it was even for 1959.

Hey Lexx, sorry to hear of your ongoing problems.

I've had some problems of my own, through very trivial, perhaps even laughable to you, compared to yours, but it has kept me from coming back until today.

3 days ago, there was a minor outbreak of insanity around here. I almost came to ask at LL, but in addition to being tired (for understandable reasons, not mysterious ones), I wasn't sure whether to ask in astrology or conspiracy theories. Long story short, a bunch of people were shrieking, and they seemed unconnected to each other. I want to include one old woman on a bus who normally didn't act that way (and wasn't actually shrieking) and definitely not connected to the others, though it's possibly an encounter with them put her on edge. It was really disturbing. Lasted for hours while I was out. Wasn't present the following day. (The police also weren't coming out as they normally do which implies they had more serious issues elsewhere, perhaps the younger and more volatile doing more than shrieking in incoherent rage...)

Don't know if it's connected, but the clinic someone close to me goes to has been doing urine tests on everyone, but won't say why, and it's not ordered by the doctors (and lots of doctors pass through for some reason, which is also new, meaning they don't get into the habits of doing what the clinic wants before they're gone with a new doctor in place). Just one of the reasons that the clinic is starting to freak me out, and wonder if there was a connection between some coming under a "rage virus." Sure didn't help my own mood or energy level.

Oh well, enough on that. I do hope where your samples are taken aren't ant-infested as I hear the labs in that clinic I spoke of is...or that you wouldn't benefit from Granny Cam. (Gods, I just tried looking up the basic site, and having to skip over several porn sites before getting to legal services. Google is more of a shopping mall than search engine today, and I gave up on trying to find it. But they've caught a lot of abuse of sick and elderly by health care workers, though the clinics, hospitals, and such have absurd legal protection against liability, though not counting the rogue nurses acting on their own who set up patients for robbery and worse, especially if taking care of them in their own home.)

Freaky Friday! I almost mentioned that one. My favorite movie version. It's amazing how many movies Jodie Foster played in at that age, and the versatility she had even back then.

Hope for a nice quiet weekend for myself and everyone else reading this.
