Realpolitik is omnipotent. Its greatest executor in Australian history, John Howard, wielded it like a cutlass to terrify, abuse and mangle Australia for 11 long years. His grand, hard Right ideological vision for us all left no-one and nothing unlceaved... the Left and Center of politics, the High Court of Australia, the ABC, the working people, the environment, single mothers, refugees, treasury, our children's children and indigenous Australians. Even his own cabinet and political party (whom he threatened to 'tear apart' if he was deposed as its leader), were within the arc of his swing.

Yet, in the same way Howard used Realpolitik to rule like a Machiavellian Prince over the Liberal Party and the people, so too did he come discover that Realpolitik makes no friends. In a final, terrifying Shakespearnean scene, John and his wife Janette referred to by Howard's own ministers as 'Lady Macbeth' were finally cut down and clubbed to death by the Left over Climate Change and by The Center over WorkChoices. The people did to Howard what his cabinet colleagues tried but failed to do, and for me also, it was personal. For Howard to win this time around would mean vindication of his political method of splitting people apart through wedge politics and then pitting them against each other. Howard took credit for an economy he did not create, and he was a liar. He shut down public information, and stood up for criminals like billioinaire Richard Pratt whilst condeming without trial hapless Australians like David Hicks against all principles of law and justice. He met with and accepted money from religious cult that does not allow their followers to vote, and he abused his Senate majority by passing only 4 of Labor's amendments compared to his 600. He took public money and used it to fund Liberal Party advertising and worst of all; he made a determined effort to dismantle Federalism which is the very bedrock of Australian political and social structure. We came within a hairs breath of becoming a nation that grants policitical power to immoral, unethical and intentionally divisive leaders. I asked myself the question, did I want my daughter to inherit that? No way, and there was no bigger fight that this. In my mind, terrorism did not threaten our way of life like Howard actually did, and Howard mobilised billions of dollars and sacrificed the lives of our diggers to fight against that.
