I wish I were a liberal
By Nancy Morgan

I wish I were a liberal, because then everyone would like me. My family would start talking to me again, and chances are, my ex-husband would want to renew the marriage vows he broke when I started spouting conservative opinions.

I'd like to be a liberal because it's ever so much easier to allow others to form my opinions for me instead of researching an issue myself. That always gets me in trouble, especially when the facts I discover diverge from the latest politically correct consensus.

I'd like to be a liberal because then I'd be rewarded for all my shortcomings and nothing would ever be my fault. I'd be an important cog in the wheel of social justice, and a cherished warrior in the current fight for equality.

If I were a liberal, I would be free to have sex whenever and with whomever I want -- and be considered 'empowered' to boot. I could abort any inconvenience with nary a thought because my rights to my body trump the life I would have suctioned out of me.

I'd like to be a liberal because any guilt I would normally feel for what used to be considered deviant, irresponsible behavior may be assuaged by merely advocating the expenditure of other people's money on whatever the cause du jour is. Very cool. Especially since my stock portfolio has tanked.

I want to be a liberal because they care so much. They have a lock on all the fashionable emotions, like tolerance, diversity, equality and patriotism. And as long as my intentions were pure and I 'care', I wouldn't have to accept responsibility for any negative consequences that my actions might cause.

I'd like to be a liberal because everyone knows that conservatives are racist, homophobic, stupid and, well, beneath contempt. Conservatives are motivated by -- gasp -- profit, instead of being nice. Enough said.

It would be swell to be a liberal because I'd be able to redefine reality to my own specifications. I could turn failure into success, murder into choice, lies into 'misstatements', and theft into investment. I would automatically be considered wise, instead of opinionated. Best of all, I could make up the rules as I go along, change them in midstream and then demonize anyone who doesn't agree with me.

It's great to be a liberal because everyone knows they hold the moral high ground. They don't lie, cheat or steal. Oh, and they don't condone torture. The media says so, so it must be true.

Before I am able to join this community of man, however, there are a few ground rules:

I have to acknowledge that government is the best and only solution for any problems America has. Despite the fact that pretty much every government solution to date has been a disaster.

I must agree that America is bad and white Christian males are responsible for all that is wrong with the world. Further, I must agree that terrorists and third world dictators are either freedom fighters or misunderstood men of good would (will).

Oh, and I must acknowledge that dialogue is better than war. Even though decades of dialogue haven't worked, things are different, now that Obama is president. I must have faith. After all, the times, they are a changin'.

I'd, of course, be expected to not only condone, but happily embrace gay marriage and the long list of newly minted sexual behaviors, and swear to never mention the adverse health risks or the proven harm they do to traditional families.

I'd also have to quit judging people. (Except conservatives.) After all, liberals would allow me to do whatever I want, free from moral censure, and it's only fair I do the same for them.

I'd have to immediately quit smoking, in public at least. I'd be required to agree that global warming is real and man is the cause. Even though the earth has cooled in the last decade, everyone knows its still getting warmer. I'd also have to renounce Christianity in favor of Mother Earth and believe that the Constitution is a 'living instrument'.

I'd have to agree that victimhood trumps merit and that liberals know best. Always. And lastly, I'd have to support the notion that racism is still rampant, even if it is the silent 'institutional' type.

In return, I'll be accepted, popular, and invited to the best parties. I'll be eligible for the right to housing, health care, a living wage (even if I don't work) and happiness. And as long as I remain a liberal, no-one is allowed to insult me. How cool is that?

I'll finally get my columns published in my own hometown paper and would have a good chance of getting face time on MSNBC. Best of all, I'll be able to atone for my sins by merely paying Algore for a few carbon credits. Then, I would live happily ever after. Isn't that worth sacrificing such ethereal and frivolous notions like freedom, individualism and principles?

If that's the definition of a liberal, then I suppose you already are one.

How odd you don't recognize yourself in this sentence acoustic. I've given you plenty of notice you operate in your own little bubble world of unreality...for a very long time.

racism is still a problem in our country. sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and other forms of bigotry are still a problem too.

It's just more subtle, but it's still racism

My own white mother even pointed to me that racism is still a problem here in Sacramento,California. She even told me that her partner,Robert who is mixed got roughed up by some younger white cops. She also talks about the segregation issues here in Sacramento too.
I remember dealing with racism growing up here too. I have definitely been called the n'word.

I am part black on my father's side

I also want to point out that racism is every race's problem. I have seen a person of every race to be a racist.

I find all racism to be disgusting. I have been annoyed with black racists just as much as white racists.

the end of slavery and civil rights legislation didn't end racism.

the election of man that is half black and half white with no black american slave ancestry doesn't mean that racism is not a problem. It's not like a black man born of 2 black parents with medium dark brown skin was elected.

I don't view him as the first black president. His mother was white.

I don't believe in the one drop rule. My black father doesn't mean that I am black. I would never deny my white mother's heritage. I don't let people pin me down as being black. Heck.....with my looks, I have been mistakened for Hispanic,Pacific Islander,East Indian, and even Arab

I feel that a lot more people need to acknowledge multiracial people.

I know that there is a lot more multiracial people here in USA, but only 2.6 percent of Americans identified as more than one race for the 2000 Census. I was one of those.

I read that actually 1/4 of white Americans actually are part black. A majority of black Americans are actually part white.

It seems there are lot of issues with multiracial people. Many multiracial people can't acknowledge themselves and can't acknowledge others that are multiracal.

also we shouldn't generalize people of political beliefs just like we shouldn't generalize race, nationality, religion, etc.

It seems that this forum section is misnomer.

There is a lot of divisiveness for this forum to be called Global Unity. It's more like Global Disunity.

lol raymond, i always think the forum title should have a ? tacked on the end.

i agree with you, but even more so, i think pretty much everyone is mixed if you really get down to it.

I agree

everybody is mixed

I agree with Eckhart Tolle saying that identifying as a race is just one of the forms of ego identification. I read that in his book, A New Earth.

Yes, America is a terribly racist nation.

O'Bomber just appointed a Justice to the Supreme Court based on her race and gender. Kind of a 2 fer.

He sure didn't appoint her for her judicial temperament, her knowledge of the law or her court decisions...many of which have been overturned by higher courts...with one pending before the US Supreme Court as of this moment.

Now, if we could just get the real racists...those consumed by race, whose every waking thought is all about race...to cool it, we might make some "more" progress.

It's not my argument which got short-circuited katatonic.

Would you like to talk about the racist O'Bomber? Or, how about O'Bomber's racist pastor? Or how about the antisemitic racists on O'Bomber's staff? Or, how about the general racist antisemitic proclivities of the far left in general?

You want to talk about any of that racism katatonic? Would you like to discuss the racism involved in appointing a particular race to the Supreme Court? Was it her turn? Is that the yard stick by which we measure legal talent, legal knowledge and adherence to Constitutional principles?

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life."

oh so sorry jwhop i mistook you for inserting a little sarcastic humour there!

funnily enough sotomayor has a history of NOT voting the liberal line when it comes to law. seems she takes each case to have its own merits and flaws.

historically lawyers/judges who have succeeded despite their minority and poverty handicaps are MORE likely to fall on the stricter interps of the LAW, to have done their homework better in order to get to the same place as their more traditional counterparts.

are you sure YOUR objections to her are NOT based on the fact that she is a hispanic woman and therefore LOOKS like an "affirmative action" appointee?

My objections to this racist judge is that she either doesn't know the law or ignores the law in her rulings.

Say katatonic, your description of those judges from disadvantaged backgrounds...who usually manage to rule directly on the laws...sounds exactly like Clarence Thomas.

Were you thinking about Clarence Thomas when you posted that comment?

i wasn't thinking of any one person in particular. many people who succeed DESPITE social obstacles are actually better at their job than those who find easy entry. because they had to work harder to get through.

i am aware that clarence thomas is considered to be an "uncle tom" by some because he doesn't necessarily vote "black". not my opinion, since i don't know enough about him to judge or discuss his (very long) record.

so have you read the decisions sotomayor has handed down - all 380 of them?

We're not talking about people succeeding katatonic. We're talking about judges who either do or do not rule according to the laws as written by the Congress of the United States...or faithfully follow Constitutional provisions which are written in plain English.

Sonia Sotomayor has proved she's a racist and gender advocate who could care less about the law. In other words katatonic, Sonia Sotomayor is a judicial activist who makes up the law as she goes along and disregards the actual law. She's on record as stating judges "make policy" from the bench and she doesn't see anything wrong with that at all.

Most Americans have had enough and are fed up with judges making law from their courts. There's no authority for them to do so and it's specifically the Congress and the authority granted to Congress by the Constitution who are authorized to "make the laws".

Sonia Sotomayor is about to be overturned on an appeal to the United States Supreme Court for her judicial activism which saw her disregard the law.

well i have heard otherwise. the left don't like her because she doesn't fall on either side of the fence. ditto the conservatives who would just love her to be an "affirmative choice" candidate.

and what i said about people succeeding goes for judges as well as anyone else. by definition i would consider the better judge to be one who rules according to law not personal preference.

the fact that she can see the point of view of someone who has been on the short end of two different sticks doesn't mean she will twist the law. it just means she will give equal judgment and not side with the "big guys".

The political left is panting and drooling over Sonia Sotomayor katatonic. I don't know where you're getting this drivel but it would be helpful if you would provide links to leftists who are unhappy with Sonia Sotomayor.

As for whether or not Sonia Sotomayor would twist the law or outright disregard the law, we don't have to wait to find that out. She already has and been overturned for doing so and she's about to be overturned again from the Supreme Court.

She's a political activist who makes the law up according to her biases which fall along the lines of race and gender.

Again, please provide some links to those who think O'Bomber is not far enough left and is too white. O'Bomber is a certifible Socialist. What were they looking for? An out and out Stalinist Communist?

since you call any source i put out there rubbish i don't see the point in links and anyway,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonia_Sotomayor

there's plenty there on her..i remember that out of 380 decisions 5 had been challenged and 3 overturned. not a really significant number.

she has a huge experience and don't get your hopes up that she'll be overturned yet. "She is considered a political centrist by the American Bar Association Journal[14][15] and other sources and organizations."

i think you would benefit greatly jwhop from giving up putting the cart before the horse. you've run so many alarmist scenarios since i came here i have lost count. probably more than sotomayor's decision tally. judge souter was expected to be a major conservative but - surprise surprise - he voted law not politics.

does this sound like a "leftist" judge by your definition - you know, all leftists think abortion is great?

"In Center for Reproductive Law and Policy v. Bush,[50] Sotomayor upheld the Bush administration's implementation of the Mexico City Policy which requires foreign organizations receiving U.S. funds to "neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations". Sotomayor held that the policy did not constitute a violation of equal protection, as the government "is free to favor the anti-abortion position over the pro-choice position, and can do so with public funds".[51]"

"In Pappas v. Giuliani,[52] Sotomayor dissented from her colleagues’ ruling that the NYPD could terminate an employee from his desk job who sent racist materials through the mail. Sotomayor argued that the First Amendment protected speech by the employee “away from the office, on [his] own time,” even if that speech was “offensive, hateful, and insulting," and that therefore the employee's First Amendment claim should have gone to trial rather than being dismissed on summary judgment."

it doesn't even appear to agree with obama! landsakes chile!

Wiki is hardly a source from which leftist policy makers spout off katatonic.

So where are the leftists who believe Sotomayor is too conservative...or not liberal enough?

Sotomayor is a racist, a leftist, a judicial activist and isn't fit to sit on any federal court. And...I don't care that she was appointed by Bush I.

Racist and gender biased...both in one statement.

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life."
Sotomayor

Her decision, now before the Supreme Court...on which she will most likely be overturned involved the race of police and fire personnel who were denied promotions after scoring highest on the tests administered to chose the promotions list.

Now, since you said it and you didn't have to say it...how about you providing the names of the leftist groups who oppose Sotomayer because she's too conservative or not far enough left.
