Cao To Steele: Come And Get Me -- Just Remember You Need My District
Versha Sharma | November 8, 2009, 1:26PM

Rep. Joseph Cao (R-LA), the lone GOP vote for the House health reform bill that passed late last night, has responded to RNC Chairman Michael Steele's warnings about stepping outside of party lines. (WATCH Steele: "We'll come after you.")

Cao told CNN that Steele retains "the right to come after those members who do not conform to party lines, but I would hope that he would work with us in order to adjust to the needs of the district and to hold a seat that the Republican party would need." He represents the second congressional district of Louisiana, a solidly Democratic district that includes New Orleans. Cao said earlier today that he put the needs of his district over what was popular with his own party.

Cao's opponent was former Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA), who was under indictment on corruption charges at the time of the election, widely seen as the sole reason the Republican was able to triumph in this specific district. His unique victory was celebrated by Steele and other GOP leaders, a fact which the young lawmaker is not letting party leadership soon forget.

On November 5, Steele issued the following warning to Republicans considering voting for the House Democrats' health bill:

Candidates who live in moderate to slightly liberal districts have got to walk a little bit carefully here, because you do not want to put yourself in a position where you're crossing that line on conservative principles, fiscal principles. Because we'll come after you. You're gonna find yourself in a very tough hole if you're arguing for the president's stimulus plan or Nancy Pelosi's health plan. There's no justification for growing the size of government the way this administration and this Congress wants to do it.And according to CNN, the freshman Republican from Louisiana isn't fazed in the slightest:

Cao chuckled when asked about the comment and said he "would like to remind" Steele that he and other Republican leaders trumpeted Cao's upset win over Democrat William Jefferson last December as a symbol of party diversity. Cao is the first Vietnamese-American member of Congress. In the same interview where Steele sounded his GOP watchdog alarm, he also said that he wants to "partner as much as possible" with tea partiers -- a potent combination that would be sure to stir up some fun reactions in Cao's district, which voted 75% to elect Obama in 2008.

Cao told CNN that President Obama called him around noon yesterday to personally ask for his vote on the bill. Read Cao's statement on his vote here.

Cao will be sent to political hell...which for politicians is far away from Washington DC.

Cao is exactly the kind of republican I ripped the RNC for supporting...along with a list of others including John McCain and Lindsey Graham.

so you think duly elected congressmen should be removed at the whim of the party inner circle? that would be a fine and dandy constitutional situation! the man won a republican seat in new orleans, give him a little credit.

the whole idea of this country and its constitution is to make room for all sorts. it always amazes me that the people who shout constitutional most are the ones who think everyone should think just like them!
of course a little while ago he was the golden boy for bringing in N.O. - such loyalty really warms the heart. and acceptance and gratitude too!

Don't mistake me for a member of the Republican Party "inner circle".

In a while, when I have the time, I'll show you just what I think of the so called Republican Party "inner circle".

It seems there is no one in the top echelons of the Republican Party who understands plain English. I’m not going to help you. You’re a total write-off as far as I’m concerned. My goal is to defeat you and effectively throw you and the rest of the Socialist light crowd out of the Republican Party. Events over the past week prove there is no hope of reforming the party while you are still an active part. The fiasco in NY-23 only added fuel to the fire you’ve started among Conservatives as did the endorsement of Charlie Crist over the Conservative Rubio. There is no virtue in supporting a candidate simply because he/she has an R following their name.

I’m a man of my word. Here’s your postage paid return envelop stuffed with my additional response and no contribution.

Yes, I want to help America. Yes, I want to help the Conservatives protect America and American taxpayers.

That's the reason I'm not sending a cent to the Republican Party.

I'm not going to contribute a cent to help elect the likes of Arlen Specter, Susan Collins, Olympia Snow, Mel Martinez, Charlie Crist, Chuck Hagel, Mary Mack, Mike Castle, Mark Kirk, John McHugh, Frank LaBlondo, Leonard Lance, Dave Reichert, Chris Smith, Richard Lugar, John McCain, Lindsey Graham or any of the other so called Republicans who gleefully stab Conservatives...and America in the back at every opportunity.

I told the RNC years ago to find, fund and run bright, energetic, articulate real Conservative candidates against democrats and some of our so called Republicans.

That didn't happen and the same pattern continues.

I'm being nice this time. I'm sending your letter with my comments back in one of my own envelopes and my own stamp.

Next time you send me a request for money, I'm going to send you back an empty envelope; your own postage paid envelope.

I hope the Republicans do axe all the moderates from their party. That way no one will want to vote for them and the party will just die... and something new and not so completely delusional will arise from the ashes.
