We justify ourselves each time we take a breath...

Patchouli and I became acquainted with each other in college. I was doing my student teaching. Each day after I was finished, I would go to the local corporate bookstore, and get a coffee, and browse the metaphysical section.

One day, as I was taking my snack to the cafe area, I noticed...HIM. The physical incarnation of godhood....I just remember feeling without a fraction of a doubt that I NEEDED to sit with him, and stare. Obviously, being somewhat shy, I didn't. As I passed by him, I caught a whiff of "something." Next thing I knew he was gone. Drat! Well I figured that it was what it was, and would never see, nor sniff him again.

A week or two goes by. Again in said bookstore, with my roommate this time, in the cafe area. At a pause in our conversation I look up, and whom do I see, but HIM!!! I squeeked out: "Oh my god! it's that really cute guy I was telling you about!" My roommate said something to the effect of, "well go and talk to him." I looked up again, and didn't see him, so I decide to wander over to the metaphysical section, just to see if there are any new astrology books. When I arrive, HE is already there! So being my painfully shy self, I move down the row slowly, and stop next to him. Only interested in him, yet unable to say anything, other than "Excuse me." I go around to the other side, all the better to stare at him, without being obvious about it. We are both looking at each other, and I look down. When I next raise my head he was GONE. All that was left, was that whiff of "something." Ack! Twice met, no words exchanged, only glances. I was sure that he was gone forever.

The very next day, I was in the mall, picking up my formal for my senior music recital, and all of a sudden I have this overwhelming urge to go into the hippie store...you know the kind where you can buy Grateful Dead stickers, hemp clothing, subversive stickers, and incense? I really didn't have anything else to do, so I figure what the hell. I go in, wander about, and end up in the corner with the incense sticks. Wondering "Why am I in here?!?"

All of a sudden, I hear this voice say: "Hey, Didn't I see you in Border's yesterday?"

I look up. I see HIM! Once my brain manages to remind me, he asked a question, I giggle nervously, and say, "Yeah, you did!" We spent the next countless minutes getting to know each other, and I discover that he wears, Patchouli Essential Oil.

The rest as they say is history, and today is our 13th anniversary of the day we finally got to speak to each other, instead of just staring.
