Reagan 101

Today is President Ronald Reagan's 101st birthday. Our nation is a far different place than it was during the Renaissance years of the Reagan Administration. In this critical election year it would be wise for our elected leaders, candidates for office and our fellow citizens to revisit the simple wisdom and uncommon vision of Ronald Reagan.

To sit back hoping that someday, someway, someone will make things right is to go on feeding the crocodile, hoping he will eat you last--but eat you he will.

There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.

The problem is not that the people are taxed too little. The problem is that the government spends too much.

If the big spenders get their way they'll charge everything on your taxpayers express card, and believe me they never leave home without it.

Government always finds a need for whatever money it gets.

Government does not solve problems it subsidizes them.

The government's view of the economy can be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving subsidize it.

No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth.

Government is like a baby. An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.


Many of us find ourselves telling the younger generation about what America used to be like. Our president believed in American Exceptionalism and bowed to no foreign leader, our president understood that our nation was "the last best hope of man on earth," our president did not pander to our enemies and betray our allies and our president made us proud to be American citizens. We were governed by the rule of law, we were protected by our constitution and the free market created jobs and opportunities for advancement. Ronald Reagan warned us.

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on from them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.

You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done.


America has reached a turning point, what sort of country will we leave behind? Have we done all that could be done?

America remembers our beloved 40th president today! In honor of President Reagan’s 101st birthday, American’s For Prosperity put together this great video reminding us of the time-tested truths Reagan stood for.

Last year at this time, I had the honor of speaking at the Young America’s Foundation’s Reagan Centennial dinner at the Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara. You can watch or read the speech here;

it was an homage to Reagan’s famous “Time for Choosing” and a discussion of the state of our nation today.

During the Illinois leg of the One Nation Tour, we got to visit Reagan’s hometown of Dixon, as well as his alma mater, Eureka College. It was a very moving experience, which I wrote about here, here and here.

As I wrote in an op-ed last year on Reagan’s centennial:

I had the privilege of coming of age during the era of Ronald Reagan. I like to think of him as America’s lifeguard. As a teenager, Ronald Reagan saved 77 lives as a lifeguard on the Rock River, which ran through his hometown of Dixon, Ill. The day he was inaugurated in 1981, a local radio announcer famously declared, “The Rock River flows for you tonight, Mr. President.”

The image of the lifeguard seems to represent what Reagan was to America and to the freedom-loving people of the world. He lifted our country up at a time when we were in the depths of economic, cultural and spiritual malaise. We were told that we must accept that the era of American greatness was over; but with his optimism and common sense, President Reagan held up a mirror to the American soul to remind us of our exceptionalism.

We are all so grateful for his courage and leadership; and like President Reagan, we believe that our best days are yet to come because “there will always be a bright dawn ahead” for America.

why do i put it in this thread?

note the date. smack in the middle of saint ronnie's rule.

one may remember that while the lifelong ACTOR said "government is the problem" he was growing government by leaps and bounds. let us cease the canonization and get real.

reagan was a real likeable guy. as a young man he was head of a huge labour union! perhaps his "turning" was not exactly what it seemed?

since everyone loves ghosts under the bed and traitors in the white house, let's admit that no president has been perfect.

How many times is it going to be necessary to tell you katatonic...that Ronald Reagan made an agreement with Tip O'Neal...Speaker of the House and a demoscat.

The deal was that Reagan would accept 1 dollar in tax increases for every 3 dollars in reductions in federal spending.

The tax increases went into effect but Tip O'Neal reneged on the reductions in federal spending and they never happened.

In fact, for every dollar in tax increases Reagan agreed to....which were really closing loop holes in the tax system, Tip O'Neal and his demoscat comrades in congress increased spending 2 dollars.

This is not difficult to understand katatonic. Nor is this difficult information to find.

So, why do you keep bringing up what is an utterly phony issue about Ronald Reagan?

It never ceases to amaze me katatonic that you can't remember what you said only minutes or hours ago. How do you manage that...or is it a "selective memory"?

Now katatonic, I've given you the rational for that "increased spending by government under Reagan". It wasn't Reagan's idea or his intention. It was a deliberate con job by a demoscat House Speaker who lied through his teeth to Ronald Reagan and then did exactly the opposite of what he promised.

This shouldn't be too difficult for you to understand katatonic. It has the added benefit of being absolutely true in every respect. You'd know that if you ever managed to get off your lazy posterior and do your own research...for a change.

I can understand leftist antipathy for Ronald Reagan. He...with help from Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul...put the leftists ideal society..the Soviet Union, on the ash heap of history and further he kicked the ass of another favorite of leftists...Daniel Ortega, back inside the borders of Nicaragua when he was attempting to spread communist revolution in Central America.

You don't have to like Ronald Reagan. But at least have the good grace to stop lying about Reagan.

increased spending is not the same as increased taxes! lordamercy jwhop. 2+2 does not = 17

but you repeatedly cite tip o'neill's betrayal...in that ONE instance. taxes (income taxes are far from the only kind as you know) continued to be increased pretty much every year of his two terms, apart from very early on, when the result was a recession.

the increased spending on military and the war on drugs are just two of the GROWTH ingredients i was thinking of.

as cheney famously remarked it was "reagan" who "taught us that" deficits don't "matter".

Increased spending IS growing government katatonic. Chalk that up to the lying demoscat Tip O'Neal, not Ronald Reagan who agreed to 1 dollar in tax increases in exchange for every 3 dollars in federal spending REDUCTIONS.
